Update at 5 p.m.: Two in custody following double shooting in Ypsilanti that left 17-year-old dead

What started as a fistfight ended with one teenager dead and another teen wounded in Ypsilanti early this morning, police said.

Officers were called to the 300 block of Worden Street about 12:15 a.m. and found two people who had suffered gunshot wounds, a press release from the Ypsilanti Police Department said.

A 17-year-old Ypsilanti Township man died at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Superior Township of a gunshot wound to the neck, the press release said. An 18-year-old man is hospitalized in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the face.

The press release said police determined that the shooting stemmed from a fistfight that escalated. It said police had detained people and were conducting interviews.

Several detectives and a mobile command unit were investigating the shooting at 389 Worden St. this morning. Flags used to mark evidence littered the front and back yard of the home. Investigators had also placed flags in the yards of two or three nearby houses.

Officers began removing police tape marking the crime scene and picking up the flags about 8:15 a.m.
