Skyline High School Top Scholars

Skyline High School will hold its 2013 graduation ceremonies Monday, June 10, 6 p.m., in the EMU Convocation Center. The class includes approximately 391 graduates.

Vidyasagar Anupindi
Parents: Ravi and Padma Anupindi
Activities and Awards: Vidyasagar was a part of the National Honor Society and Tri-M Music Honor Society. He played oboe in Skyline’s band and orchestra for four years and was a part of Skyline’s Drumline for four years. Vidyasagar was also a part of Michigan Youth Ensembles for three years, the All-State High School Orchestras in 2012 and 2013, as well as the Michigan Youth Arts Festival Honors Band in 2013. He has also spent some time volunteering as a coach for a Washtenaw Elementary Science Olympiad event at King Elementary School.
Plans After Graduation: Vidyasagar plans to attend music school for oboe performance at a university, along with a dual degree in an undecided major, though the university is not yet decided.

Peter Bakker
Parents: Peter Bakker
Activities and Awards: Peter was a member of the National Honor Society. He is a Scholarship award winner and AP scholar. He was a three-year captain of the boys varsity soccer and basketball teams. He was a member of the Latin Club and Student Action Senate. He is also a member of the United Methodist Youth Fellowship.
Plans After Graduation: Peter plans to attend either Carleton College or Macalester College and play basketball, or attend University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he was accepted into the aerospace engineering program.

Madeleine Boisvert
Parents: Peter Boisvert and Julie Janusz
Activities and Awards: Maddie was a member of the National Honor Society. She was a National Merit Finalist. She played French horn in the Skyline Band for three years and marched with them her freshman and sophomore years. She was a four year member of Skyline Crew and was a captain her junior and senior years.
Plans After Graduation: Maddie will be attending the University of Michigan, majoring in Mathematics.

Emma Borjigin-Wang
Parents: Michael Wang and Jimo Borjigin
Activities and Awards: Emma was a member of the National Honor Society. She was a National Merit Finalist and Scholarship Winner and AP Scholar with Honor. She was a Presidential Scholar candidate and secretary for the Skyline student government. She has played piano for twelve years and tennis for two.
Plans After Graduation: Emma will be attending Harvard in the fall, where she plans to study biology.

Ying Bonny Cai
Parents: Haimian Cai and Liyue Huang
Activities and Awards: Bonny is a passionate artist with a vivacious spirit. She studies classical drawing under her beloved teacher and friend: Julee Li. She won two Silver Keys and a Gold Key from the National Scholastic Art and Writing Competition, was a Celebrating Art published artist, and hosted Project Runway for Relief, a charity fashion show showcasing her self-sewn garments to help raise funds for local organizations. Bonny is also president of the Interact Volunteer Club and enjoys hosting parties for senior citizens and helping children at the Hands-on-Museum. She is secretary of the Tri-M Music Honor Society, artistic director of the literary magazine Teen Spirit, an AP Scholar with Honor, a National Merit Finalist, and an enthusiastic tenor sax player in the marching band. Her other talents include eleven years of classic piano playing and being able to eat her weight in peanut butter and cannoli pie. During her free time Bonny enjoys running outdoors, playing ukulele, lounging around with friends, and petting bunnies.
Plans After Graduation: Bonny was admitted into the Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design Dual Degree Program. This is a five year program after which she will graduate with a Bachelor's Degree of Arts and a Bachelor's Degree of Fine Arts. She hopes to major in International Relations and Fashion Design.

Jaymes Dempsey
Parents: Karen Pollens and Bernard Dempsey
Activities and Awards: Jaymes is an avid bird photographer and birder. He plays several musical instruments, and loves to read and write. He has done a number of projects through his temple, including assistant teaching, musical mentoring, and serving the homeless.
Plans After Graduation: Jaymes is undecided regarding his future plans.

Samir Desai
Parents: Bhupendra Desai and Thuy LeDesai
Activities and Awards: Samir has been a member of Skyline’s band program for three years, participating in marching band during those years as well. He was a member of the Skyline Crew team for three years and on its Varsity team for two years. Some of his favorite hobbies include playing video games and dancing. Samir participated in the DECA business competition and will represent Skyline at the International Conference in Anaheim, California.
Plans After Graduation: Samir will be attending the University of Michigan and hopes to dual-enroll between the College of Engineering and Ross School of Business.

Daniel Fendrick
Parents: Mark Fendrick, Stephanie Keiles, Jen Martin
Activities and Awards: Daniel was involved in many extracurricular musical activities, and participated in summer music institutes and festivals throughout high school, often receiving scholarships to do so. He was a member of the Skyline National Honor Society and Tri-M musical honor society.
Plans After Graduation: University of Michigan School of Music, Theater, and Dance.

Jack Hu
Parents: Zengjia Hu and Xia Shao
Activities and Awards: Jack was the Vice President of the Skyline Chapter of the National Honor Society. He was a member of the Skyline Crew Team and served as a captain in his junior and senior years. He was a U.S. Presidential Scholar candidate, awarded the Midwest Scholastic Rowing Association Academic Athlete Award, and was also one of his school’s representatives for the SEC All-Academic Banquet. Jack was a part of the Skyline High School Symphony Orchestra and acted as a violin section leader for four years. He enjoys playing piano in his spare time.
Plans After Graduation: Jack will be attending the University of Michigan College of Engineering.

Alexander Kaldjian
Parents: Eric Kaldjian and Cynthia Stiles
Activities and Awards: Alex was a member of the Skyline Health and Medicine Magnet Program. He was a captain of the varsity crew team, played varsity tennis and junior varsity track and field. Alex was a member of the Skyline Chapter of the National Honor Society and a tutor for the Skyline ACT Club. He was a National Merit Scholar Finalist and Scholarship Winner. Alex was also a section leader of the Skyline Symphony Orchestra. He has worked in cancer research at the University of Michigan.

Plans After Graduation: Alex plans on attending Northwestern University. He has yet to decide on a major.

Samuel Keller
Parents: Matthew and Joy Keller
Activities and Awards: Sam is a National Achievement Finalist and scholarship winner, and an AP Scholar. He has served as President of the Student Action Senate, President of the National Honor Society, and President of the Tri-M Music Honor Society. He plays the clarinet and has participated in the Skyline Band for four years, received highest ratings at the MI Solo and Ensemble district and state levels, and was chosen to participate in the MI All State Band. He has played both high school and club soccer, earning 3 varsity letters, a State Cup Championship, and served as co-captain during the 2012-2013 season which saw Skyline Men’s Soccer reach the regional finals. He is co-captain of Men’s Track and Field and was chosen to the Southeastern Conference (SEC) All-Academic Team. He also serves his First Congregational Church of Ann Arbor community, and has participated in many of their mission outreach trips with the youth fellowship. Sam received the honor and award of an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point.
Plans After Graduation: Sam will be attending Princeton University and plans to major in Political Science, and Public and International Affairs while also participating in the ROTC program.

Minjung Kim
Parents: Sung Kim and Jeung Shin
Activities and Awards: AP Scholar Award, Community Service Varsity Letter, Women's Tennis Varsity Letter, National Honor Society, Link Crew, Skyline Women's Tennis Team for 4 years, JSA (Debate club), WISE (Women In Science and Engineering) Club, Red Cross Club, Volunteer at soup kitchen every month through church, Volunteer at childcare service every week at church, Tutoring at Highland Park in Detroit and Volunteer at University of Michigan Hospital (Summer).
Plans After Graduation: Attending Johns Hopkins University and double majoring in neuroscience and psychology.

Eric Larson
Parents: Ron and Bebe Larson
Activities and Awards: Eric played on the varsity soccer team sophomore year. He has also participated in chess club. The Skyline chess team won 1st place in the high school state tournament in 2012. He was also a National Merit Finalist. Eric was dual enrolled and taking math classes at the University of Michigan. He is volunteering in a lab in the department of Radiology at the University of Michigan.
Plans After Graduation: Eric will be attending the University of Michigan College of Engineering.

Hannah Lee
Parents: Jason Lee and Suk Ban
Activities and Awards: Hannah was a member of the National Honor Society. She was a National Merit Finalist and Scholarship Winner and an AP Scholar. She participated in the Communications, Media, and Public Policy magnet program from her sophomore to senior year. She played volleyball her freshman and sophomore year and has volunteered as a coach for Forsythe Middle School and Rec&Ed. She served as the secretary and vice president in Skyline’s Student Action Senate. In her senior year, she served as the president for the Diversity SLC.
Plans After Graduation: Hannah will attend the College of Literature, Science and the Arts at the University of Michigan.

Mingquan Ma
Parents: Min Wang and Kaiyu Ma
Activities and Awards: Ming was a member of National Honor Society, a 2012 National Merit Finalist, and an AP Scholar with Honor. He was inducted into the International Thespian Society and served as President of Theatre Board as a senior. He has a varsity letter in theatre and has participated twice in the Michigan Interscholastic Forensic Association theatre competition, earning two certificates of excellence and one of superior honors in acting. Ming has also participated in soccer and swimming in his freshman and sophomore years, and plays the piano.
Plans After Graduation: Ming plans to attend the University of Michigan’s College of Literature, Science, and the Arts.

Kaavya S. Puttagunta

Activities and Awards: Co-Captain of Varsity Tennis team, tennis team member for 4 years (varsity for two), volunteering (Red Cross, Food Gatherers, Veteran's Affairs), National Honors Society, National Merit finalist, AP scholar, dedicated pianist, President of the Health and Medicine magnet.
Plans After Graduation: Kaavya will be attending Case Western Reserve University, majoring in psychology while pursing a pre-medicine tract.

Andrew Ragheb
Parents: Ash and Amal Ragheb
Activities and Awards: Andrew was a four-year member of Skyline’s Varsity Golf Team. In addition, he was on the Tennis team during his junior year. He was a member of Skyline’s National Honor Society and part of the Student Government. Andrew also served as the Treasurer for Skyline’s Red Cross Club. Outside of school, Andrew enjoys spending time at his church, serving as a deacon and chanting hymns. He has also volunteered at AACRC’s VBS as a group leader for the past 7 years. Currently, Andrew volunteers with the University of Michigan Health System, spending his summer with patients at MedRehab and at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital.
Plans after Graduation: Andrew will be attending the University of Michigan and is undecided about his major.

Ashleigh Shanley
Parents: Tom and Maureen Shanley
Activities and Awards: Ashleigh has been a member of the Skyline swim team for the past four years, being team captain in her senior year. She is a three time state champion once in 2011 (Division 1) in the 100 breaststroke and twice in 2012 (Division 2) in the 100 breaststroke and 200 Individual Medley (IM). Ashleigh was a two-time All-American swimmer in 2012 (100 breast and 200 medley relay) and automatic consideration for 2013 All-American (100 breast and 200 medley relay). She is the conference record holder in the 100 breaststroke and a four time conference champion (twice in both 2011 and 2012 in the 100 breast and 200 IM). This year she was also a finalist for the Detroit Athletic Club Athlete of the Year award. Along with athletic achievements, Ashleigh has also received scholarly awards such as USA Swimming Scholastic All-American and AP scholar with honor. She has been a member of Skyline's National Honor Society, a Link Crew leader at Skyline, and a Religious Education teacher at St. Joseph's Parish for the past two years.
Plans after Graduation: After graduation, Ashleigh will be attending and swimming at Duke University.

Xinran (Sarah) Wang
Parents: Huili Xin & Wei Wang
Activities and Awards: Sarah was a member of the National Honor Society and an AP Scholar with Distinction. She played varsity tennis for three years, and studied piano for six. She also participated in the Skyline marching band and Science Olympiad team, and competed at Nationals with the Quizbowl team, which she co-captained. In her spare time, Sarah enjoys accumulating obscure bits of knowledge, quoting Oscar Wilde, and watching British dramas.
Plans After Graduation: Sarah plans to attend Carleton College, and is undecided regarding her major.

Yue(Sally) Yin
Parents: Kejie Yin and Mei Wang
Activities and Awards: Sally was a member of the Skyline Red Cross Club. She was elected Vice President her senior year. She was a key organizer and advocate of three blood drives at Skyline High School, helping to collect over 120 pints of blood for the Washtenaw community. Sally was also a four-year member of Skyline field hockey team. She was voted JV captain her sophomore year and played on the Varsity team junior and senior year. In addition, Sally has volunteered at the VA Hospital since her freshmen year. She was awarded the varsity letter in Community Service and the Michigan Field Hockey Association Academic All Star Award.
Plans After Graduation: Sally will be attending the University of Michigan, studying in molecular biology and management.
