Snyder will see 'One Term Nerd' billboard on daily commute between Ann Arbor and Lansing

By Ryan J. Stanton

Gov. Rick Snyder will see a new "One Term Nerd" billboard on Interstate 96 on his daily commute between Ann Arbor and Lansing.

Michigan Democratic Party Chairman Mark Brewer announced the new campaign, a play on Snyder's own "one tough nerd" slogan from 2010, on Thursday.

This billboard now stands on I-96 near Lansing.

Michigan Democratic Party

"Democratic groups from across the state, as well as hundreds of individuals — including many new online donors to the Michigan Democratic Party — chipped in a little to make a big statement to Rick Snyder," Brewer said in a statement.

"Our grassroots supporters couldn't wait for 2014 to send a message to Snyder that working toward his defeat is 'on their agenda.' Snyder’s anti-worker, anti-woman and anti-middle class policies will spell doom at the ballot box."

The Democratic Party expects nearly 160,000 commuters every week will see the billboard just as many Michiganders are being hit hard by Snyder's tax increases.

MLive reported on Thursday that Snyder's approval ratings are down after signing controversial right-to-work legislation, but his chief of staff says the administration continues to look up.

"Ours is an 8-year project," Dennis Muchmore said Wednesday at a legislative and public policy conference. "We're not here to win the polls at the end of the second year. We're here to fundamentally change the way the state operates and does business."

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 11:34 p.m.

Why are those clever Democrats so sure that Snyder's private jet flys up and down I-96?

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 9:24 p.m.

It is too bad, Virg Bernero, the hard charging democrat candidate for governor in 2010 did not win. But he won only 39% of the vote and carried only four counties in the lower peninsula. They were (big surprise) Wayne, Ingham, Gennesee, and Washtenew, which all have become federal aid themeparks in their own right. It seems the rest of the state was so unenlightened to vote for Snyder in 2010 and continue to be so in supporting him. Perhaps the resdients of OZ can sprinkle their magic dust over rest of the state and Michigan can remain an economic wasteland with closed factories, laid off union employees collecting full salaries, and mass migration of residents out of the state. Then we can all sit back and view that as progress.

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 8:18 p.m.

There is another one on I-96 in Livingston County saying...Good Job Governor Snyder or something of that nature...I guess it depends on which one he notices...LOL

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 7:40 p.m.

I just think it is so funny, all for Snyder are voted down, not for Snyder voted up it is about the bill board not about " and how do you feel Snyder is running the state."

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 4:05 p.m.

Don't forget anti-endangered species/environment! I laughed upon seeing the pic, but it could use a different colloquialism...I like nerds, just not him.

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 3:24 p.m.

Personally really like the fact the Synder is trying his best to look out for the State and all the people, not just the unions. Lot of unpleasant decisions need to be made, it is part of the job some previous governors passed on nearly completely.

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 3:15 p.m.

Ryan, I am thoroughly convinced that your poll questions are thought up by third graders (and I apologize to third graders). I realize these are unscientific polls, but time after time you don't have a direct "Yes" vs "No" counterpoints and instead whether intentional or not your questions become misleading or intentionally slanted. Instead of trying to make them cute have a simple "I don't support this message" as an direct counterpoint to the first option instead of making it about being "distasteful".

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 7:56 p.m.

I know Ryan does not answer when you send him e-mails

#1 Nerd is no longer an insult. It's cool to be a nerd. #2 I'm a liberal democrat and didn't vote for Snyder, but I think this billboard is in really bad tase- just another great example for kids of how adults bully each other.

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 10:10 p.m.

Funny I got the same response, I guess someone is setting a fine example.

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 3:02 p.m.

Noting wrong with being a nerd though. I am nothing like Synder.

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 1:18 p.m.

so everyone would rather leave our state the way Granholm left us the war on politics will NEVER be won, and all we do is fight whether rick Snyder is good or bad for us of course hjs people instantly love him while those who did not vote for him hate, him and now I see some who did vote for him dislike him now. I just know what the former gov was doing was not working.I only see alot of mis managing because Mich has a lot of high up there businesses. where is all the darn money going.

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 12:50 p.m.

I am sure the unions and the democrats don't like our Governor spending cuts, doing things that make sense for the public, business and the health of the State of Michigan and not just special intrest groups. I am sure they hate him. just like all of us who tried to get granholm out for years of her bloated budgets, overspending over taxing and business destroying governing almost destroyed our state hated her. but as usual the dems see nothing wrong with going to far

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 12:15 p.m.

After having to put up with very "distasteful political ads" for over a year with the presidential elections, I believe enough is enough. I say grow up and let's start being responsible adults and stop with the name calling. I can think of numerous other ways these funds could have been used.

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 11:43 a.m.

I think the Governor will probably get a chuckle out of seeing the billboard....however, I think he has more important things on his mind than petty political name calling. I do not agree with Governor Snyder on everything, however, I do respect his tireless work ethic when it comes to getting things done. Unlike some of his predecessors, he does not "kick the can down the road" with problems for future generations to deal with. He is making the tough decisions now, some decisions which should have been dealt with decades ago. Those clowns in Washington D.C. could use a lesson from Governor Snyder on what true leadership is.

Hesh Breakstone

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 11:39 a.m.

I think that the sign is fantastic and accurately reflects my own view of "one-term-nerd" Snyder... Still not a single job produced by anything that he has done that can't be traced back to Obama's saving of the US auto industry.... What we can thank Snyder for is not only a war on women..... war on the middle class, AND a war on seniors having raised taxes on seniors while giving corporate America a $1.8B tax holiday. That's his accomplishment - selling all of us out in favor of letting corporate America slide on taxes..... Nice to see the dems finding a pair... As always - Google Snyder's dashboard and even with his very own spin and smoke and mirrors AND by the very criteria that HE choose to be judged by he is a miserable failure, out of touch, and hopefully learning that you cannot manage the people of a state like he managed the folks at Gateway - we won't be outsourced by Dear Leader Ricky....

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 12:51 p.m.

wow did you read that from a democratic press release? hilarious

Stuart Brown

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 8:25 a.m.

Thanks to Slick Rick, Michigan is indistinguishable from Indiana in terms of public policy. Go Hoosier Michigan! All we need to do now is privatize I-94 and we will have succeeded in turning the state into a rich person's paradise.

Stuart Brown

Sat, Feb 23, 2013 : 3:55 a.m.

genetracy, I use to live there--nobody talks about how the Klan use to run the state, at least until an old Klan membership list showed up (pretty embarrassing for a number of people!) The reason Indiana makes money off of the privatized turnpike is due to the fact that the company which took over raised prices. This is politically correct for Republicans since increased prices for service are no longer taxes since the "govment" no longer owns it (private profits--goooood; low cost public services--baaaaad).

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 9 p.m.

Indiana did sell the toll road a few years back because it lost millions of dollars every year. Now the state makes millions every year. I guess only a democrat thinks a money losing operation is progressive.

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 8:57 p.m.

With the exception of Gary, drive through the state of Indiana sometime. You will see new factories and businesses being built and current factories expanding operating at full capacity. Unemployment there is the lowest in the midwest. Once again, with the expception of Gary, you will not find the blight like Detroit, Filnt, or Saginaw. Yep, Indiana sure sounds like a wasteland.

Oh the Democrats. How they wish we could go back to the good old days of Jenny Granholm, with our heads in the sand, just KNOWING everything would fix itself. But most importantly, not EVER, EVER EVER offending anyone. By the way,, this, as a headline, makes you look pretty childish.

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 12:54 p.m.

so true! and ask detroit how the constant cesspool of democratic mayors had worked out for them, the corruption there didn't start with smooth Kwame people have chosen to have a business leader run the state after TOO MANY years of a horrible governor that turned this state into a welfare state.

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 12:56 p.m.

I am sure the union bosses had a LOT to do with this. they didn't like their pocket books being shrunk by people not being FORCED to join their corrupt unions.

Oh no! Our governor will now be aware that there are Democrats who disagree with him! This will be a horrible shock to him! I hope he will survive this trauma! These libs think a bit too much of themselves.

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 1 p.m.

the libs think WAY too much of themselves. sad thing is their way has proven OVER AND OVER again to fail. you eventually run out of tax money and have to go take more from the people. it's really no different than back when we had a king and he just kept "needing" just a little bit more to live his grand life style. the thing is EVERYONE in DC thinks they need to live like a king off of our backs and hard work while some of the public is just happy to sit on the side, collect their welfare checks and smoke dope all day. this state and this country are a mess, and people like the president and his cronies are the ones leading us into ruin. Snyder at least HAS idea's on how to help the state recover and grow the job market.

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 12:06 a.m.

Unless you have a big vested interest in one party's welfare, such as being a Democrat U.S. President like Obama, or are a top Republican political strategist like Karl Rove was, signs like this one are trivial and near-meaningless. If anything, that sign seems to indicate the desperation Democrats are now feeling over the fact that we've had a Republican-controlled state government for some time now - and that they're learning how offended a large voter block has become over Democrat gun control advocacy. The Dems appear to be trying to move the conversation away from what was originally called a vital and necessary program (gun control) to other things, like returning to anti-Snyder / Anti-Republican matters. I know that's exactly the pitch I'm getting in calls from Democrats (as of 3 hours ago). Sad, really, that both parties do this. But that's all the more reason to listen to what people are actually saying - instead of always talking AT them.

I often pause and wonder what would happen to such commenters had they lived under a true dictator. 'Nuff said.

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 11:48 p.m.

You will notice it states Snyder will see this billboard on his daily commute from AnnArbor to Lansing. Michigan provides its Gov, a very nice residence in Lansing. Every Gov until Snyder has lived at the residence and entertained at that residence. But Snyder refused to accept the residence saying; (on the record) this residence is not up to his or his families standards and would not disrupt their current living standards. So the MSP (Michigan State Police) transport Snyder daily to and from his home to Lansing and return. Plus a security detail assigned to his home. So we (tax payers) pay so Snyder can sleep at home every night because he says (he and his family are to good to reside at the Governors residence). I cant wait until election day 2014 to vote SNYDER OUT!

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 7:39 a.m.

He probably didn't say the Governor's mansion was up to his current living standards; you probably twisted his words to make it sound like that. There really isn't much to complain about. If the mansion isn't used as much, we're probably saving money there. The fact that the State Police are transporting him every day...what's your point? They do that for all Governors. Even if he didn't commute from home to Lansing, he'd still be provided protection! He's gonna have a security detail no matter where he goes! He's the Governor. You're going to sadly be disappointed in 2014, because he's going to be around another four years.

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 11:35 p.m.

Praise Jesus!!!!!!!! Let's get this idiot out of office. He has systematically destroyed the state of Michigan.

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 8:51 p.m.

Granholm and Kwame Kilpatrick did a thorough job of destroying the state long before Snyder.

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 10:30 p.m.

This "one tough nerd" has certainly caused more angry divisiveness in this state than even Her Majesty...........

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 6:23 p.m.

This governor has trodden blindly and callously upon the same people statewide as he has here.

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 3:56 p.m.

No. Ann Arbor is not the same as "the sate." Ann Arbor is angry because he is a moderate republican with fiscal sense, and not a liberal democrat whose main focus is social programs and marijuana. There are 350,000 or so people in Washtenaw county, and those people's opinions do not necessarily reflect those of the 9.5 MILLION other Michiganders.

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 9:51 p.m.

Interesting. I wold have thought a conservative would have taken Gov Snyder to task for raising taxes. Not only has he raised taxes on individuals, he has now suggested raising taxes on business (wholesale gas tax increase, which if in place now would put gas at $4.15 gal or more) . What gives? President Obama didn't raise taxes for four years (other than a cigarette tax) and the right went absolutely nuts, calling him every name in the book including "tax raiser". But the GOP governor raises taxes on thousands of people and suggests MORE, and we hear nothing from the low tax people. Why is that? Is this similar to worshiping Reagan, who raised taxes and supported gun bans?

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 6:08 p.m.

I don't have a "job", WALKER. I own my own business. I was happy the MBT was done away with, but it does not change the FACT that Snyder has raised taxes and wants to raise more. If any democrat did this people like you would be all over them, whining the whole time about how raising taxes is un-American and can only lead to job loss.

No, I don't think the RTW decision was tough at all for Snyder. If it was tough he would have allowed public comment, legislative amendments and discussion and offered his thoughts PRIOR to signing it in a day. He did it in the dark of night, with a lame duck session. To me that shows weakness.

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 3:19 a.m.

You're kidding, right? You don't think it was "tough" to support right-to-work? Disagree with him if you like, but he doesn't take the safe or easy way out on anything. He's probably the toughest governor we've ever had.

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 7:50 p.m.

What do we really need? More politicians that do not have any fiscal responsibility? All your social issues aside, if the economy is not fixed, the state will not recover. These are tough times and tough decisions need to be made. We don't need some pansy politician who is worried about political correctness trying to balance the checkbook.

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 12:50 a.m.

Hard to put "your social issues aside" when so many Republican dominated state legislatures, including Michigan, are going after women's rights in an alarming way. They are focused on women's bodies and women's reproductive rights to the extent that little attention is being paid to issues such as education, healthcare, jobs, and the economy.

who's the democrats have this time? snyder is running the state like a business. granholm ran it down...

Basic Bob

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 1:59 a.m.

Three words about Granholm: Single... State... Recession.

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 10:09 p.m.

"You lack a total understanding of everything Gov. Granholm did for our great state. You need to read more; it is they way we, humans, upgrade our software." Oh yes, we can't forget the gross tax on businesses, which pretty much decimated the state. I know at least 5 restaurants that went out of business because of it. She really blew us away!

You lack a total understanding of everything Gov. Granholm did for our great state. You need to read more; it is they way we, humans, upgrade our software.

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 8:34 p.m.

And Virg didn't really give us a viable alternative. Sorry, but someone had to say it.

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 8:15 p.m.

Obama's auto bailout saved the state. plain and simple.

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 7:26 p.m.

The election isn't for 20 months. The message has zero relevance to the next election. This is about Brewer's reelection campaign. He made his name with this approach and he's trying to remind Democrats why they like him. The entire democratic delegation to DC came out against him, as did the UAW. All he's got left is the MEA. It'll be interesting to see what happens, but this message has nothing to do with Snyder or the next election.

John of Saline

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 7:04 p.m.

He'll just shrug. He's pretty consistently upbeat and refuses to name-call or go negative, which must annoy his adversaries.

I vote for half-term nerd, recall him before the middle class is completely eviscerated

David Cahill

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 6:51 p.m.

I love the billboard! I expect to see more of them around the state.

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 6:44 p.m.

Don't forget his war on disabled seniors like me. He raised my state taxes as he gave his capitalist cronies tax breaks. One term is too much.

Macabre Sunset

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 2:34 a.m.

YpsiGirl, you keep repeating this, but you don't seem to know what an S-Corp is.

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 9:44 p.m.

Gyre, Stop it. Snyder gave a $1.8 BILLION dollar tax break to C & S Corporations alone. How many Mom and Pop businesses have PUBLICLY traded stock?

Superior Twp voter

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 8:09 p.m.

Yea, he's at war against everything and everyone. Sure.

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 7:31 p.m.

He eliminated double taxatin for small business owners. I guess all small business owners are capitalist cronies.

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 6:42 p.m.

I could care less about the "nerd" term, given that "The Last Word" will be hosting another "Nerd Nite" right here in Ann Arbor. However, knowing all of you are so interested in voting this man out motivates me to make sure that I'm there voting in support of the Governor during the next election.

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 5:58 p.m.

Has anyone pointed out the OTHER billboard that Gov. Snyder will be seeing every morning on his way to work? The one on I-96 between Brighton and Howell that says "Governor Snyder - Keep Up the Good Work."

Em Blonde

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 3:10 p.m.

And who do you think paid for that billboard? Dick DeVos!

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 9:45 p.m.

No one cares?

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 7:38 p.m.

True. Saw that one yesterday also. It is almost the same place westbound that the eastbound "one term Nerd" sign is up. Ryan, why aren't you running an article about that?

Superior Twp voter

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 5:53 p.m.

Comrade Mark Brewer's pathetic attempt "to matter" as he knows he is on his way out.

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 8:53 p.m.

Comrade...aren't you just so clever....

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 7:29 p.m.

This is 100% about Brewer vs. Lon Johnson. A year from now it would be about Snyder, but right now it is only about Brewer.

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 5:50 p.m.

I like the message, very concise!

Concerned Neighbor

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 5:46 p.m.

Of the 160,000 people who see it daily lets be aware that most probably don't vote or read it. I am confused by the message, are that many people not happy with running the state like a successful business.....only the strong survive! Look at Detroit and think of what could happen to the state with out strong leadership.

Em Blonde

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 3:12 p.m.

The State Government has simply forgotten that it's "WE THE PEOPLE" not we the wealthy, business and corporations. This is the State of Michigan and the State of Michigan Corporation.

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 8:41 p.m.

And I for one do not want to be demoted from "citizen" to "customer".

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 7 p.m.

Yes, because Government is not a business. We cannot simply sell off struggling parts of the state or country, and privatize every function in Government. There is term for this too, and its call fascism.

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 5:39 p.m.

The war on Women's rights, the war on Unions, the war on education, tax cuts for business, tax increases for the retirees, the middle class and poor, what's not to like about Snyder?

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 8:30 p.m.

War on womens rights? Because they required a basic standard of cleanliness and safety in abortion clinics? Because they made it illegal for a man to coerce a woman to have an abortion? What happened to "pro-choice"? Seems you are pro-abortion and women's choices be damned.

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 7:29 p.m.

The State's budget is in a better position? Since is doesn't mirror how the President is doing (can we say big big deficits), he must not be doing a good job.

Top Cat

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 5:57 p.m.

You forgot to add...the war on economic decline, the war on job destruction, the war on crony capitalism and the war on deficit spending.

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 5:52 p.m.

Don't forget allowing us to shoot at grey wolves (just off the endangered species list), allowing common folk to handle bear cubs in Newberry (until someone gets mauled and sues that is)...the list goes on and on

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 5:27 p.m.

Where is the "I don't think it's distasteful, i just think it's wrong" option in the poll?

Unusual Suspect

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 10:29 p.m.

That's extremely insulting to interns and desk lamps.

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 6:08 p.m.

I didn't even say I would vote that way. Seems like they asked two interns and a desk lamp and made their answers the three choices...

Macabre Sunset

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 5:22 p.m.

Public name-calling may be a beloved part of the political atmosphere these days, but I don't see how this makes the Democrats look like anything more than sore losers.

Macabre Sunset

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 10:02 p.m.

It is name-calling in that context. I know that's a word you have trouble with, but when you change the phrase, the phrase must be taken as a whole. I'm not sure what a drop in popularity due to the legislature deciding it's time to reign in the unions has to do with mean-spirited billboards. The Republicans didn't put up mean billboards when the unions reached too far with all those proposals last fall. They simply organized opposition. I'm glad they did. I'm not a Republican myself and the anti-abortion stuff really turns me away from them, but I voted for Snyder and will do so again.

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 9:51 p.m.

MS, you said the "one term nerd" phrase is name-calling. It's a term the Gov has used himself, even making it a key part of his campaign. Snyder's approval ratings dropped dramatically after he signed 'right to work.' I just see the billboard as attempting to capitalize on that.

Macabre Sunset

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 6:29 p.m.

Who said it was offensive? It just makes your team look like sore losers.

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 12:39 p.m.

Gotta love how the person objecting to the use of "nerd" is responding by calling people "sore losers." The "one term nerd" phrase is just a playful twist on Snyder's "tough nerd" self-description. Snyder's phrase has humor to it, and so does this billboard's response. That's the context and I don't know how anyone could see it as offensive.

Macabre Sunset

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 2:32 a.m.

I would suggest a dictionary. I realize those who oppose Snyder both have trouble with simple words like context, and with concepts such as not everyone who thinks the Democrats are acting like sore losers is a Republican.

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 11:45 p.m.

@ dsponini: Republicans have very delicate sensibilities, and a harsh word like "nerd" hurts their finely honed contextual distinction sensors.

Macabre Sunset

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 5:39 p.m.

If the contextual distinction isn't obvious, there's no debating it.

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 5:29 p.m.

How's this name calling? He's a "self proclaimed" nerd
