Snyder will see 'One Term Nerd' billboard on daily commute between Ann Arbor and Lansing

By Ryan J. Stanton

Gov. Rick Snyder will see a new "One Term Nerd" billboard on Interstate 96 on his daily commute between Ann Arbor and Lansing.

Michigan Democratic Party Chairman Mark Brewer announced the new campaign, a play on Snyder's own "one tough nerd" slogan from 2010, on Thursday.

OTNbillboard.jpg

This billboard now stands on I-96 near Lansing.

Michigan Democratic Party

"Democratic groups from across the state, as well as hundreds of individuals — including many new online donors to the Michigan Democratic Party — chipped in a little to make a big statement to Rick Snyder," Brewer said in a statement.

"Our grassroots supporters couldn't wait for 2014 to send a message to Snyder that working toward his defeat is 'on their agenda.' Snyder’s anti-worker, anti-woman and anti-middle class policies will spell doom at the ballot box."

The Democratic Party expects nearly 160,000 commuters every week will see the billboard just as many Michiganders are being hit hard by Snyder's tax increases.

MLive reported on Thursday that Snyder's approval ratings are down after signing controversial right-to-work legislation, but his chief of staff says the administration continues to look up.

"Ours is an 8-year project," Dennis Muchmore said Wednesday at a legislative and public policy conference. "We're not here to win the polls at the end of the second year. We're here to fundamentally change the way the state operates and does business."

Why are those clever Democrats so sure that Snyder's private jet flys up and down I-96?

It is too bad, Virg Bernero, the hard charging democrat candidate for governor in 2010 did not win. But he won only 39% of the vote and carried only four counties in the lower peninsula. They were (big surprise) Wayne, Ingham, Gennesee, and Washtenew, which all have become federal aid themeparks in their own right. It seems the rest of the state was so unenlightened to vote for Snyder in 2010 and continue to be so in supporting him. Perhaps the resdients of OZ can sprinkle their magic dust over rest of the state and Michigan can remain an economic wasteland with closed factories, laid off union employees collecting full salaries, and mass migration of residents out of the state. Then we can all sit back and view that as progress.

Personally really like the fact the Synder is trying his best to look out for the State and all the people, not just the unions. Lot of unpleasant decisions need to be made, it is part of the job some previous governors passed on nearly completely.

Ryan, I am thoroughly convinced that your poll questions are thought up by third graders (and I apologize to third graders). I realize these are unscientific polls, but time after time you don't have a direct "Yes" vs "No" counterpoints and instead whether intentional or not your questions become misleading or intentionally slanted. Instead of trying to make them cute have a simple "I don't support this message" as an direct counterpoint to the first option instead of making it about being "distasteful".

so everyone would rather leave our state the way Granholm left us the war on politics will NEVER be won, and all we do is fight whether rick Snyder is good or bad for us of course hjs people instantly love him while those who did not vote for him hate, him and now I see some who did vote for him dislike him now. I just know what the former gov was doing was not working.I only see alot of mis managing because Mich has a lot of high up there businesses. where is all the darn money going.

I am sure they hate him. just like all of us who tried to get granholm out for years of her bloated budgets, overspending over taxing and business destroying governing almost destroyed our state hated her. but as usual the dems see nothing wrong with going to far

After having to put up with very "distasteful political ads" for over a year with the presidential elections, I believe enough is enough. I say grow up and let's start being responsible adults and stop with the name calling. I can think of numerous other ways these funds could have been used.

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 11:43 a.m.

I think the Governor will probably get a chuckle out of seeing the billboard....however, I think he has more important things on his mind than petty political name calling. I do not agree with Governor Snyder on everything, however, I do respect his tireless work ethic when it comes to getting things done. Unlike some of his predecessors, he does not "kick the can down the road" with problems for future generations to deal with. He is making the tough decisions now, some decisions which should have been dealt with decades ago. Those clowns in Washington D.C. could use a lesson from Governor Snyder on what true leadership is.

Hesh Breakstone

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 11:39 a.m.

I think that the sign is fantastic and accurately reflects my own view of "one-term-nerd" Snyder... Still not a single job produced by anything that he has done that can't be traced back to Obama's saving of the US auto industry.... What we can thank Snyder for is not only a war on women..... war on the middle class, AND a war on seniors having raised taxes on seniors while giving corporate America a $1.8B tax holiday. That's his accomplishment - selling all of us out in favor of letting corporate America slide on taxes..... Nice to see the dems finding a pair... As always - Google Snyder's dashboard and even with his very own spin and smoke and mirrors AND by the very criteria that HE choose to be judged by he is a miserable failure, out of touch, and hopefully learning that you cannot manage the people of a state like he managed the folks at Gateway - we won't be outsourced by Dear Leader Ricky....

genetracy, I use to live there--nobody talks about how the Klan use to run the state, at least until an old Klan membership list showed up (pretty embarrassing for a number of people!) The reason Indiana makes money off of the privatized turnpike is due to the fact that the company which took over raised prices. This is politically correct for Republicans since increased prices for service are no longer taxes since the "govment" no longer owns it (private profits--goooood; low cost public services--baaaaad).

With the exception of Gary, drive through the state of Indiana sometime. You will see new factories and businesses being built and current factories expanding operating at full capacity. Unemployment there is the lowest in the midwest. Once again, with the expception of Gary, you will not find the blight like Detroit, Filnt, or Saginaw. Yep, Indiana sure sounds like a wasteland.

the libs think WAY too much of themselves. sad thing is their way has proven OVER AND OVER again to fail. you eventually run out of tax money and have to go take more from the people. it's really no different than back when we had a king and he just kept "needing" just a little bit more to live his grand life style. the thing is EVERYONE in DC thinks they need to live like a king off of our backs and hard work while some of the public is just happy to sit on the side, collect their welfare checks and smoke dope all day. this state and this country are a mess, and people like the president and his cronies are the ones leading us into ruin. Snyder at least HAS idea's on how to help the state recover and grow the job market.

Unless you have a big vested interest in one party's welfare, such as being a Democrat U.S. President like Obama, or are a top Republican political strategist like Karl Rove was, signs like this one are trivial and near-meaningless. If anything, that sign seems to indicate the desperation Democrats are now feeling over the fact that we've had a Republican-controlled state government for some time now - and that they're learning how offended a large voter block has become over Democrat gun control advocacy. The Dems appear to be trying to move the conversation away from what was originally called a vital and necessary program (gun control) to other things, like returning to anti-Snyder / Anti-Republican matters. I know that's exactly the pitch I'm getting in calls from Democrats (as of 3 hours ago). Sad, really, that both parties do this. But that's all the more reason to listen to what people are actually saying - instead of always talking AT them.

You will notice it states Snyder will see this billboard on his daily commute from AnnArbor to Lansing. Michigan provides its Gov, a very nice residence in Lansing. Every Gov until Snyder has lived at the residence and entertained at that residence. But Snyder refused to accept the residence saying; (on the record) this residence is not up to his or his families standards and would not disrupt their current living standards. So the MSP (Michigan State Police) transport Snyder daily to and from his home to Lansing and return. Plus a security detail assigned to his home. So we (tax payers) pay so Snyder can sleep at home every night because he says (he and his family are to good to reside at the Governors residence). I cant wait until election day 2014 to vote SNYDER OUT!

metrichead

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 7:39 a.m.

He probably didn't say the Governor's mansion was up to his current living standards; you probably twisted his words to make it sound like that. There really isn't much to complain about. If the mansion isn't used as much, we're probably saving money there. The fact that the State Police are transporting him every day...what's your point? They do that for all Governors. Even if he didn't commute from home to Lansing, he'd still be provided protection! He's gonna have a security detail no matter where he goes! He's the Governor. You're going to sadly be disappointed in 2014, because he's going to be around another four years.

Interesting. I wold have thought a conservative would have taken Gov Snyder to task for raising taxes. Not only has he raised taxes on individuals, he has now suggested raising taxes on business (wholesale gas tax increase, which if in place now would put gas at $4.15 gal or more) . What gives? President Obama didn't raise taxes for four years (other than a cigarette tax) and the right went absolutely nuts, calling him every name in the book including "tax raiser". But the GOP governor raises taxes on thousands of people and suggests MORE, and we hear nothing from the low tax people. Why is that? Is this similar to worshiping Reagan, who raised taxes and supported gun bans?

They are focused on women's bodies and women's reproductive rights to the extent that little attention is being paid to issues such as education, healthcare, jobs, and the economy.

"You lack a total understanding of everything Gov. Granholm did for our great state. You need to read more; it is they way we, humans, upgrade our software." Oh yes, we can't forget the gross tax on businesses, which pretty much decimated the state. I know at least 5 restaurants that went out of business because of it. She really blew us away!

The election isn't for 20 months. The message has zero relevance to the next election. This is about Brewer's reelection campaign. He made his name with this approach and he's trying to remind Democrats why they like him. The entire democratic delegation to DC came out against him, as did the UAW. All he's got left is the MEA. It'll be interesting to see what happens, but this message has nothing to do with Snyder or the next election.

Of the 160,000 people who see it daily lets be aware that most probably don't vote or read it. War on womens rights? Because they required a basic standard of cleanliness and safety in abortion clinics? Because they made it illegal for a man to coerce a woman to have an abortion? What happened to "pro-choice"? Seems you are pro-abortion and women's choices be damned.

Public name-calling may be a beloved part of the political atmosphere these days, but I don't see how this makes the Democrats look like anything more than sore losers.

Macabre Sunset

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 10:02 p.m.

It is name-calling in that context. I know that's a word you have trouble with, but when you change the phrase, the phrase must be taken as a whole. I'm not sure what a drop in popularity due to the legislature deciding it's time to reign in the unions has to do with mean-spirited billboards. The Republicans didn't put up mean billboards when the unions reached too far with all those proposals last fall. They simply organized opposition. I'm glad they did. I'm not a Republican myself and the anti-abortion stuff really turns me away from them, but I voted for Snyder and will do so again.

northside

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 9:51 p.m.

MS, you said the "one term nerd" phrase is name-calling. It's a term the Gov has used himself, even making it a key part of his campaign. Snyder's approval ratings dropped dramatically after he signed 'right to work.' I just see the billboard as attempting to capitalize on that.

Macabre Sunset

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 6:29 p.m.

Who said it was offensive? It just makes your team look like sore losers.

northside

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 12:39 p.m.

Gotta love how the person objecting to the use of "nerd" is responding by calling people "sore losers." The "one term nerd" phrase is just a playful twist on Snyder's "tough nerd" self-description. Snyder's phrase has humor to it, and so does this billboard's response. That's the context and I don't know how anyone could see it as offensive.

Macabre Sunset

Fri, Feb 22, 2013 : 2:32 a.m.

I would suggest a dictionary. I realize those who oppose Snyder both have trouble with simple words like context, and with concepts such as not everyone who thinks the Democrats are acting like sore losers is a Republican.

northside

Thu, Feb 21, 2013 : 11:45 p.m.

@ dsponini: Republicans have very delicate sensibilities, and a harsh word like "nerd" hurts their finely honed contextual distinction sensors.
