By AnnArbor.com Staff

Gary Bell is retiring after 10 years at the helm of SOS Community Services in Ypsilanti, the nonprofit announced today.

Faye-Askew King, SOS program and services director, was appointed as the interim executive director by the SOS Board of Directors.

Bell is credited with helping the agency shift from traditional sheltering to a “housing first” model of service delivery and coordinated a permanent housing project for 27 homeless families.

He played a role in planning the creation of 500 new units of affordable housing through the Washtenaw Housing Alliance and was one of the founders of the Washtenaw Alliance of Children and Youth and served on its Steering Committee, SOS said in a news release.

The SOS Board of Directors also announced today that Jesse Bernstein, former SOS board member and Ann Arbor Chamber of Commerce president, has been appointed as temporary special director for community relations. His roles will include coordinating the search for a permanent executive director and working with community partners.
