Superior Township and the Road Commission to discuss 20 potential road projects for 2012

By Lisa Allmendinger

When the Superior Township Board and the Washtenaw County Road Commission meet tonight, more than 20 potential road projects will be discussed, with a total estimated cost of more than $700,000.

However, five of these proposed projects have the potential for Community Development Block Grant funding, which would make them more affordable, while two are joint projects with adjacent townships.

Last year, the township spent about $161,000 on road projects and used $30,810 in local road matching funds from the Road Commission as well as $8,793 in drainage matching funds. This year, there will be $32,061 in local road match funding, an increase of $1,251 since 2011, but officials have the same amount in drainage match money, which is $8,793.

The increase is because of the addition of uncurbed, non-subdivision local road miles under the jurisdiction of the Road Commisison.

Here are the projects that will be up for discussion.

  • Durham Court - milling, overlay and new American Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant sidewalk ramps at an estimated cost of $13,000.
  • Liverpool Court - milling and overlay with ADA sidewalk ramps at an estimated cost of $15,750.
The following five projects might have some of the costs funded by CDBG grant funding:

  • Panama Avenue from Dawn to Stamford - milling and overlay with ADA compliant sidewalks at an estimated cost of $64,000.
  • Stamford Road from Wiard Road to Panama Avenue - milling and overlay at an estimated cost of $33,750.
  • Bristol Court - milling and overlay at an estimated cost of $9,000.
  • Nottingham Road from Stephens Drive to Bristol Court - Milling, overlay and new ADA sidewalk ramps at an estimated cost of $42,300.
  • Stratford Court - Milling, overlay and ADA sidewalk ramps at an estimated cost of $18,700.
  • Dover Court - milling, overlay and ADA sidewalk ramps at an estimated cost of $15,800.

In a possible shared project with Salem Township, Joy Road from Curtis Road to Gotfredson Road would be shaped and 8,100 tons of limestone would be applied at an estimated cost to the township of $51,000. The total project cost is $102,000.

In a possible shared project with Ypsilanti Township, Mott Road from Ridge Road to the Wayne County line would be ditched, pulverized, reshaped and about 1,400 tons of limestone would be added at an estimated cost of $19,500 to Superior Township. The total project cost is $39,000.

Waren Road from Dixboro Road 0.4 miles east - ditching, tree removal, reshaping the road surface and the addition of 1,550 tons of limestone with an estimated cost of $45,700.

Voorhies Road from Warren Road north 0.5 miles - ditching, shaping of the surface and the addition of 1,700 tons of limestone at an estimated cost of $46,500.

Frains Lake Road from Prospect to the pavement - ditching, reshaping the surface and the addition of 1,450 tons of limestone at an estimated cost of $43,400.

Frains Lake Road from M-153 to Cherry Hill Road - ditching, shaping of the road and the addition of about 3,550 tons of limestone at an estimated cost of $76,000.

Gotfredson Road from Cherry Hill north about 0.5 miles - ditching, reshaping the surface and 2,000 tons of limestone at an estimated cost of $62,840.

Vreeland Road east to Hickman on the north side - ditching work at an estimated cost of $12,600.

Township-wide application of limestone at a cost of $12.52 per ton with a not-to-exceed cost.

Vorhies Road from Plymouth Road to Warren Road - sealcoating at an estimated cost of $22,800.

Creekside Drive from Tanglewood to Overbrook Drive - slurry seal the surface at an estimated cost of $10,500.

Creekside Court - slurry seal the road surface at an estimated cost of $9,500.

Overbrook Drive from Dixboro Road to Rolling Ridge Court - slurry seal the road surface at an estimated cost of $15,000.

Church Street from Dixboro Road to Plymouth Road - roadside berm removal and slurry seal the surface at an estimated cost of $23,000.

In addition, the board will need to decide the number of times it will apply dust control on its 31.74 miles of certified gravel roads. Last year, the township chose to have two applications of calcium chloride on its roads at about $33,300 per application.

The board will meet Monday with Road Commission officials at Township Hall at 7:30 p.m.
