Superior Township cardiologist to challenge U.S. Rep. John Dingell for 15th District seat

By AnnArbor.com Staff

A cardiologist from Superior Township plan to take on U.S. Rep. John Dingell, D-Dearborn, for the U.S. 15th Congressional District seat, the Michigan Capitol Confidential Daily reports.

Robert L. Steele, who is running as a Republican, told the Daily he hopes the race will draw the attention of conservatives all over the country.

Steele, 52, said he realizes he must raise "well over" $1 million for a legitimate shot at defeating Dingell, the longest-serving U.S. representative, the Daily reports. Dingell has been in office since 1955.

Steele will face at least one other candidate in the primary. Ann Arbor resident Jack Lynch announced in October he would again attempt to unseat Dingell. He made an unsuccessful bid for the seat in 2008.

Dingell's spokesman, Adam Benson, previously told AnnArbor.com Dingell never declares whether he's running for another term until the year of the election, usually in the late winter or spring.

Steele, a founding shareholder of Michigan Heart, P.C., has no previous political experience, the Daily reports.

Good Luck Dr. Steele. Dingell has no medical experience and seems fine with making medical decisions for us, so I'm good with a doctor making political decisions.

aanative- oh come on! Dingell is something like 85 years old and totally ineffective anymore. This is a good case for term limits!!! It's just too bad that a democrat can't step up and challenge him!

You mean we could swap 50 years of congressional experience for a newcomer with no political experience at all? What a trade - NOT!
