Roadwork in Scio Township subdivision and Huron River Drive on Road Commission agenda

By Lisa Allmendinger

The Washtenaw County Road Commission will consider a request for a special assessment district in a Scio Township subdivision, a road improvement agreement for Huron River Drive near Washtenaw Community College and a preventive road maintenance contract at its meeting Tuesday afternoon.

Residents of the Uplands of Scio Ridge have asked for an assessment district for the rehabilitation of about 1.29 miles of roads in the Scio Township subdivision. The request is on the consent agenda and is expected to be approved.

Upon approval, Road Commission staff will be asked to compile a preliminary plan and cost estimate for the roadwork.

Also on the consent agenda is a contract for about $887,000 in planned preventive maintenance on 10 roads in various townships throughout the county. The roads will get crack and chip seal work this summer.

The commissioners are expected to discuss a road improvement agreement for Huron River Drive near Washtenaw County College (WCC) that would take place in conjunction with a planned parking structure on the campus. The college plans to build a parking structure with 473 spaces, with 50 spaces in an adjacent parking lot.

Newly appointed Washtenaw County Road Commissioner Ken Schwartz will be sworn-in for a 6-year term prior to the commission’s regular meeting.

Schwartz was appointed by the Washtenaw County Board of County Commissioners and replaces David Rutledge, who was elected to the state legislature in the November general election. Rutledge served from January 2005 to December 2010 and finished his appointment as chairman of the three-member board.

Doug Fuller is expected to be elected chairman of the board.

The Road Commission meets Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Road Commission Building at 555 North Zeeb Road, Scio Township.
