Tae Kwon Do instructor facing sexual assault, child pornography charges waives right to preliminary hearing

By Heather Lockwood

A former Tae Kwon Do instructor accused of sexually assaulting a boy last month on I-94 near Chelsea and of sexually assaulting another boy several years ago is set to appear back in court next month.

Edward James Bruner, 58, of Scio Township, faces charges including first-degree criminal sexual conduct, second-degree criminal sexual conduct and four counts of possessing child sexually abusive material.

He waived his right Thursday to a preliminary hearing in each of the three pending cases against him and is to appear back in court for pre-trial for all three cases March 22.

Bruner was arrested the night of Jan. 16 after drivers told police they saw him sexually assaulting a 12-year-old boy in his vehicle on I-94 near Chelsea.

Police said he was the boy's Tae Kwon Do instructor.

Bruner, known as "Master J.R. Bruner" to students, was an instructor at Kitchi Tae Kwon Do in Dexter Township, which is owned by Mike Trester, a detective lieutenant with the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office.

Michigan State Police Det. Sgt. Dale Smith confirmed last month that police executed a search warrant at Bruner's home in Scio Farms Estates off Jackson Road in Scio Township, and seized computers and other evidence.

The second young man, now 19, recently came forward, saying that Bruner sexually assaulted him at a Chelsea home on one occasion in 2004, said Trooper Todd Etue. The young man was a student of Bruner's at an area Tae Kwon Do studio at that time, Smith said.

Bruner's attorney, Lorne L. Brown, first assistant public defender, declined to comment on the cases today.
