Tecumseh man accused of robbing pharmacy for narcotics

By AnnArbor.com Staff

A 30-year-old Tecumseh man is accused of jumping over the counter at a Canton pharmacy to steal narcotics Saturday afternoon.

Canton police say the man entered the Rite Aid Pharmacy in the 4100 block of Canton Center Road at 3 p.m. and handed the pharmacist a note indicating he had a gun.

The note directed the pharmacist to give him narcotics, police said. The man then jumped over the counter, stole narcotics and ran.

Witnesses told police the man ran southeast into a wooded area. Officers cordoned off the area and used a tracking dog, reports said. One of the officers found the suspect lying in a grassy area and arrested him.

The case was forwarded to prosecutors to review for criminal charges.

"or something of that nature because it sensationalizes the story by using a word with a negative connotation to it that's generally associated with street drugs." Agreed.

Yeah... it may not be "Ann Arbor" news here since it happened in Canton, however, I don't see the issue with reporting this story here. I'm in Ypsilanti (which also gets reported here, but isn't technically Ann Arbor) and I'm interested in news about crime that happens 5 minutes east of me down Michigan Avenue. I feel that it's relevant. I'm curious as to what type of "narcotics" it was here that were stolen. Also, isn't it funny how the word "narcotics" is used here rather than "prescription drugs" or something of that nature because it sensationalizes the story by using a word with a negative connotation to it that's generally associated with street drugs. And yes, I do realize prescription drugs ARE in fact narcotics, I was just making an observation on sensationalizing stories.

Good question tdw. I don't know but I live two blocks from the Rite Aid at Packard and Platt. Maybe the City council needs to put a 4 month moratorium on pharmacies.
