Tecumseh man accused of two purse-snatchings in Ypsilanti Township

By Amalie Nash

Washtenaw County sheriff's deputies arrested a 41-year-old Tecumseh man accused of robbing two women of their purses in Ypsilanti Township on Friday and Saturday.

Police say the man was caught shortly after the second robbery and is expected to face two charges of unarmed robbery.

The first robbery occurred at about 6:30 p.m. Friday in the 2000 block of Washtenaw Avenue east of Golfside Road. Police say a woman was pushed into her car and was robbed of her purse.

At 5:30 p.m. Friday, a woman was loading groceries into her vehicle in the 2000 block of East Ellsworth Road, west of Hewitt Road, when a man grabbed her purse, police said.

Police broadcasted a description of the thief, which matched the description of the thief from the day before, a sheriff's media summary said.

Several minutes later, Deputy James Roy spotted the suspect's vehicle at Huron Street and Spring Street. The suspect was stopped and arrested.

The man was lodged at the Washtenaw County Jail.

It is a shame that women can't shop at this time in the evenings. Although it is pretty dark since the time change. I left to go to Krogers at 5:30 p.m. last evening. (Whittaker Rd.) I tried to find a place to park and would have had to park away from the doors. I saw to many people wandering in the parking lot. I left and went to CVS where I got my OJ and milk. Kroger's needs security guards in the lot. The stop signs are for cars to STOP and allow customers in and out. NOT sit there and wait for their passengers to come out of the store. It is not easy to get around these stopped cars. I think it is a safety hazzard.
