Teenager agrees to help woman at mall, then steals her wallet, Ann Arbor police say

By Lee Higgins

A 16-year-old Ann Arbor boy was arrested Tuesday after he agreed to help a woman park her minivan at Briarwood Mall, then stole her wallet, an Ann Arbor police report said.

The 21-year-old Saline woman was having trouble parking in a tight spot and was inches away from another car, the report said.

She started asking people for help and ultimately waved down the teenager, who unsuccessfully attempted to back her van away from another car, the report said.

The boy's friend then got into the van and was able to help out, according to the report.

When the woman got back inside her van about 4 p.m., she noticed her wallet was missing from her purse. She called 911, the report said.

Police say their investigation determined the boy took the wallet, the report said. He was released to his mother's custody.

Sounds to me like she agreed to give him the wallet in exchange for his assistance and then forgot that she did it. That, or he's trying to get repayment for all that social security she's taking and he'll never get.

Why in the world would you try to squeeze into a "too small" space?!?! Was the lot completely full? Perhaps the driver was handicapped, but those spaces tend to be generously sized. If that is not the case and the driver was able bodied, she should have picked one of the hundreds of open spaces that are almost always available at the mall. Good heavens..... not to say the alleged theft was justified in any way, but use some common sense, folks!

I'm sure Richard Kinsey would add to his list of warnings: "Do not let a stranger of any age into your car". And for what? A closer spot?

Not for a misdemeanor. Anyway, so what if he's chareged as an adult? It's still a minor offense, he'd get probation either way, there's no differnece except it might stay on his permenant record longer.

At 16 you can be charged as a adult.

"The punk in essence robbed her...a simple theft?" So the charge? Robbery? If he "robbed" her? Do you know what robbery means in the penal code? Is anyone that shoplifts guilty of robbery? She invited the person in her car, and he (may have) commited a larceny. Nothing involves any robbery, and as far as i can tell it's only a misdemeanor.

The police determined the 16 yr old STOLE the victim's wallet. It's not even close to over reacting on the victim's part. The punk in essence robbed her...a simple theft? I would consider someone lifting a pack of gum from the 7 Eleven a simple theft. And at what time did this incident occur? Was it during the school day? If yes, why wasn't the 16 year old in school?

"I may be wrong but the TEEN should be charged as an adult." well I don't know how wrong you are becasue it's your opinion but that would incude changing quite a bit of laws for a simple theft? I don't really see the point of that at all, and think it's over reacting to the fullest. I hope this lady called the stores she was in looking to see if she left her wallet in there.

What is with calling him a boy at 16? I may be wrong but the TEEN should be charged as an adult. This should be lesson learned, not another slap on the wrist young man.
