The Salvation Army of Washtenaw County seeks holiday volunteers

By Julie Baker

The Salvation Army of Washtenaw County is seeking community volunteers who are willing to give their time to support the nonprofit’s holiday activities during its 2011 Red Kettle campaign, according to a news release.

A variety of volunteer opportunities are available to fit the needs of any individual or group including:

 • Red Kettle bell ringers: TSA-WC is looking for community support to help fill remaining openings for volunteer bell ringers. Volunteers are needed to fill shifts at the nonprofit’s 35 Washtenaw County red kettle locations through Dec. 24, excluding Thanksgiving and Sundays. Volunteers are asked to donate a minimum of two hours of time, although longer shifts are encouraged. The success of TSA-WC’s Red Kettle campaign depends largely on volunteer bell ringers, and shifts are available for individuals and groups of all sizes. To sign up as a volunteer bell ringer visit www.registertoring.com/washtenaw to view and register for available shifts.
 • Toy Shop shopping partners: TSA-WC is in need of volunteers to serve as shopping partners during its annual Christmas Toy Shop on Friday, Dec. 16 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Families who signed up for Christmas assistance come to pick up toys for their children, as well as a gift card to purchase food. As they arrive, each family is connected with a volunteer who acts as a shopping partner and guides the parents through the Toy Shop to select gifts for each child in the family. Shifts are available throughout the day for individuals or groups. For more information or to sign up to volunteer as a shopping partner for the TSA-WC toy shop call 734-668-8353.
 • Food bag packing: Volunteers are needed at both TSA-WC’s Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti Corps Community Centers to help sort pantry donations and package food bags for local needy families. Volunteers can arrange a time to come in and sort items during the week at their convenience. For more information or to sign-up to help with food packing, call 734-668-8353.

Additional volunteer opportunities are available to support TSA-WC’s programming throughout the holiday season and year round. If the above options are not a match for your group, call TSA-WC at 734-668-8353 for more opportunities.

Before you give any money to the Salvation Army, you might want to familiarize yourself with their positions. For example, did you know that the Salvation Army works with right wing religious organizations to prevent gay rights? Here is a link to their position statements: http://www.salvationarmyusa.org/usn/www_usn_2.nsf/vw-dynamic-index/B6F3F4DF3150F5B585257434004C177D?Opendocument There are many other deserving charities that do not discriminate. Do your homework. -Peace, Kitty
