Thunderstorms likely in Ann Arbor area Thursday afternoon

By Cindy Heflin

5:30 p.m. update: The National Weather Service said a strong thunderstorm 4 miles south of Novi could bring downpours, hail a half-inch in diameter and 30 mph winds to northeastern Washtenaw County. People in the affected area were advised to take shelter in a sturdy building.

Scattered thunderstorms are likely late this afternoon in the Ann Arbor area, the National Weather Service said.

Some of the stronger storms will be capable of producing brief heavy downpours, small hail and gusty winds, the weather service said.

The storms are expected to last into the evening, but the weather service is not expecting severe thunderstorms like those that produced the devastating Dexter tornado last week.

I'm glad we aren't expecting storms like last week! Those were frightening!

Sky is looking very black west and north of Dexter. Weather Underground shows storm track heading northeast toward Flint. Wind is picking up now also. Chelsea may see rain any minute. Lots of red on the radar.
