Truck driver escapes serious injury when semi overturns on Jackson Avenue

By Cindy Heflin

(This story was updated at 5:55 p.m.)

A driver escaped serious injury when a truck overturned near the intersection of Jackson and Maple roads in Ann Arbor Friday afternoon.

The accident created major traffic tie-ups in the area, although the road has now been cleared, according to Ann Arbor police.

Jackson Avenue was closed for several hours, and so was the exit ramp from westbound I-94 to Jackson, Ann Arbor police Lt. Angella Abrams said. The truck was towed away and the area was reopened to traffic around 5:35 p.m.

The driver was initially reported trapped in the cab, and information on his condition was not available early this evening.

The accident was reported shortly before 2:30 p.m., and occurred when the driver "had trouble navigating a turn,'' Abrams said.

I was just driving by there around noon yesterday and thinking how dangerous and horrible that intersection and Zingerman's area is for traffic. Something needs to be done. Anyone who tries to turn left out of Zingerman's onto Jackson is literally risking their (and everyone else's) life when traffic is busy. I know this was at the intersection where the exit ramp is, but I see accidents here all the time.

The photos of the truck flip apppears to be the right turn off the I-94 exit at Jackson Road. That exit is very old and the RADIUS is so tight that a truck often will jump the curb. If the container is top heavy or going fast, it could flip. That whole exit needs a much longer run with a much wider lanes and more room for trucks to turn. It took years before Baker Road exit was redesigned.

"A driver escaped serious injury when a truck overturned near the intersection of Jackson and Maple roads in Ann Arbor Friday afternoon." I think this kind of reporting is hilarious. So there was this driver, just walking along in the road, apparently, when out of the blue, a truck overturned, almost on top of him! And there was no one driving the truck! Try that with the banking bust that made this recession worse: "A CEO got a big bonus a year after a bank was bailed out on Wall Street in 2009". Newspaper article: "A reporter received a Michigan Press Association award when an article was written in Ann Arbor in 2010." All these interesting unrelated events...

Cargo, in case anyone is concerned, was certified clean water, which was returned to its natural habitat... Once AAFD got the driver out, clean up proceeded relatively quickly. Not quite the same as pulling a honda out of a ditch. Too bad the gallery didn't get any pics or video of the actual rollover...

I'm confused. I'm back down in GA working, but this is my part of town. Did this happen at Jackson and Maple or at the Jackson exit off west bound I-94. You know, the one where the guy run his car into the bank?

From the photos, I think that it is indeed the exit you mention, except instead of going straight and running into the bank the way the guy did a few years ago, he took the right turn too fast and tipped. I wonder if the light was changing.

I drove by here around 5:15pm....certainly was a traffic problem! I was travelling down I-94 w. Sounds like I just missed the accident at I 94 and Zeeb Rd.

I was trying to go to that bank. I was going to double back and try coming from a different way before I got stuck in the traffic jam of the year on Wagner.......It took me almost an hour just to get to Chelsea (After several other road hazards including a deer jumping out and a truck going off the road) and I still haven't gotten to the stupid bank.

As of 6 pm, there is another accident at the off ramp of I-94 and Zeeb. It looks really bad....So the right side pf I-94 is closed. I saw IDIOTS drive on the shoulder!! For Pete's sake...this is illegal and could cause more accidents or deaths. PLEASE don't ever do this!!

Apparently no spill. No death (thankfully). And no apparent hurry about cleaning it up! It was before 2:30 when it happened!

Went through the area on I-94 about 4:30 and it was a mess, especially at the Zeeb Rd. exit with everyone trying to get off and back track. I agree, I appreciate the story but am curious to know how it happened.

Glad to know there is an alternate route so parents/bus can get kids picked up from school if traffic is still bad.

Traffic in the whole area is all messed up for sure. I had to detour straight down Maple to Liberty road to get to Wagner rd to get around the accident, and the lane to turn left from Wagner to Jackson was backed up about a quarter mile or so. Took me three light cycles to get through the intersection.

Straight road. Pretty low speed limit. How in the world did this happen?

I'm pretty sure that this is the view in the photo posted before. The truck is pointed east bound.

Yeah it was facing the other way, though. It looked like it was about to get off Jackson and on to the 94 off ramp.

I'm going to guess the driver was coming off of 94 west and turned right to head to maple. Little too much speed?

We all know where the intersection is. Why did you take the photo of the truck down?

Let me hazard a random guess and just say--because it's news and it adds a great deal to the story?
