By the numbers: Tuition and budget changes at University of Michigan

The cost of resident tuition and fees at the University of Michigan is edging $13,000 after the school's governing board Thursday approved a 2.8 percent increase for the coming academic year.

Below is a look at how U-M tuition, budget, financial aid and state appropriations have changed over the past 10 to six years.

In-state tuition and fees at U-M

  • 2012-13: $12,994; 2.8 percent increase
  • 2011-12: $12,634; 6.7 percent increase
  • 2010-11: $11,837; 1.5 percent increase
  • 2009-10: $11,659; 5.64 percent increase;
  • 2008-09: $11,037; 5.65 percent increase
  • 2007-08: $10,447; 7.45 percent increase
  • 2006-07: $9,723; 5.54 percent increase
  • 2005-06: $9,213; 12.34 percent increase
  • 2004-05: $8,201; 2.84 percent increase
  • 2003-04: $7,975; 5.65 percent increase

State higher education appropriations awarded to U-M

  • 2012-13: $273.1 million
  • 2011-12: $268.8 million

  • 2008-09: $1.41 billion; 4.54 percent increase
  • 2007-08: $1.35 billion; 4.06 percent increase
