Two Ann Arbor teachers awarded $500 grant by Energy Works Michigan

By Kyle Feldscher

Ann Arbor-based Energy Works Michigan announced 46 winners of the Greening Michigan Classrooms Grant, awarding a total of more than $21,000 to teachers — including two at private schools in Ann Arbor.

Martha Friedlander at Greenhills School and Wendy Lemke at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School both won $500 grants for their ideas to green their schools.

Friedlander’s winning idea was to use the grant money for compost bins to collect dining room waste, which biology students will then research.

Lemke’s plan is to use the grant money for a compost bin for use in the school’s already-established habitat garden.

Energy Works Michigan is a joint-project of The Ecology Center and Recycle Ann Arbor and is funded by a $3.5 million grant awarded by the Michigan Public Service Commission.
