Two charged in shooting in Ypsilanti that left one dead, another injured

By Lee Higgins

Two people have been charged in a shooting early Friday on Worden Street that left one teenager dead and another injured, Ypsilanti police said today.

Dominique Larkin, 17, of Ypsilanti Township, and a 15-year-old Ypsilanti boy who was charged as a juvenile are each charged with carrying a concealed weapon. Both were arraigned Saturday.

Det. Jill Kulhanek would not release the name of the 17-year-old Ypsilanti boy who was fatally shot after a fistfight broke out in the street's 300 block. He died of a gunshot wound to the neck at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital shortly after the 12:15 a.m. incident.

An 18-year-old Ypsilanti Township boy who was shot in the face was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

"We haven't determined what the dispute was (about) yet," she said.

Kulhanek said two shooters were involved in the incident, and one of two shooters has been charged. Kulhanek added that she does not anticipate additional arrests.

Neither of the two teens arraigned over the weekend was charged with murder.

Both of the teenagers charged were arrested Friday, but Kulhanek would not release details of their arrests or say whether they had criminal records. She has no information that anyone involved is a gang member, she said.

Kulhanek would not say whether investigators recovered the guns used in the incident.

Kulhanek also would not release the police report, saying "it's still an open investigation."

It was the city's third homicide this year.
