Two crashes on US-23 and I-94 slowing Friday evening commute

By Kyle Feldscher

Two crashes are slowing the evening commute on northbound US-23 and westbound Interstate 94, according to Washtenaw County dispatchers.

Dispatchers said the accident on westbound I-94 is west of Baker Road and isn't blocking the roadway. Crews were not yet on the scene of the accident at 6:20 p.m. Friday. No information on how the crash happened was immediately available Friday afternoon.

The crash on northbound US-23 near North Territorial Road was also not believed to be blocking the roadway, according to dispatch. Crews were also not yet on the scene of that accident as of 6:20 p.m. Friday.

When I first moved to Ann Arbor (the Seventies), I used to commute north bound on US 23 every week day. STRANGE how many accidents there were even back then - and it's a relatively straight and clean stretch of highway. One clear Spring morning, I had just gotten on "23" north bound when another car south bound suddenly spun out of control and, still spinning, crossed the median and stopped broadside across the north bound lanes. I was ahead of a "pack" which included at least one semi trailer truck. Luckily, I had enough distance between me and the blocking car and ahead of the pack to - apply brakes, grab my CB mic and shout a warning. If there'd been 2 seconds less warning, that would have been a record pile up and would have caused many deaths.

Clean and straight. Enough to get the driver into a lull and forget about driving for a while. If a highway has enough challenges it will keep the driver occupied for a while.

What would an attempt to get out of town on a Friday evening be like without an accident to slow you down.

When I regularly went to Howell one or two evenings a week, I didn't encounter accidents on I-94, but westbound I-94 could be slow because it was crowded from Jackson Road to Baker Road. From the other comments, it was a good idea to take Dexter-Pinckney Road and D-19 to get to Howell instead of the longer route via US-23.

Friday? Try any day. US-23 is an absolute nightmare between Ann Arbor and Brighton. Add rain, and it's a parking lot b/c you're talking a guaranteed fender bender blocking half the artery.
