Two University of Michigan students killed in car crash on I-75; three others seriously injured

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Michigan State Police say two University of Michigan students were killed and three other students were seriously injured after crashing their Subaru on I-75 North in Arenac County, according to NBC 25.

It happened shortly before 9 a.m. Saturday. The TV station reports that one student ID from Michigan State was found, and four others were from U-M.

All of the occupants were from China.

According to WDIV in Detroit, police said the driver wasn’t paying attention to the road. They were believed to be on a tour to see fall colors. Inside the vehicle, troopers said they found a map to Tahquamenon Falls State Park, and attached to that map were hand written directions to nearby hotels, WDIV reported.

The names of those who were killed have not been released.

A sad tragedy. We see it all too often; young people dying in motor vehicle accidents. Drive carefully. The life you save may be your own.

@Tom - agreed. These articles regularly include police opinions about whether "alcohol was a factor" or not. That's what toxicology reports are for.

I think the article itself violates the guidelines. It speculates about the cause and clearly blames the driver. On the other hand, I'm glad there are details about the crash. It helps me better understand the situation.

There was no speculation when the MSP reported it as inattentive driving...Again...keep your eyes on the road and arrive alive

I know a person who is a grad student at U-M and who is from Mainland China. Seems taking a day trip or a weekend trip to check out the fall colors is a very popular activity amongst Chinese students
