While the University of Michigan didn't make Kaplan/Newsweek's latest rankings of the top 25 overall most desirable schools to attend, it made several other lists in the rankings.

Hundreds of University of Michigan campus student groups and departments showed off what they have to offer incoming students during Festifall on the Diag last Thursday. U-M made several of Newsweek's best college lists.

Among the other lists KaplanNewsweek compiled were: schools for the service-minded, small schools, diverse schools, schools stocked with jocks, schools for brainiacs, rural schools and suburban schools.

The overall most desirable school was Harvard University. Rounding out the top 5 were Yale (No. 2), Stanford (No. 3), Princeton (No. 4) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (No. 5).

Kaplan/Newsweek said it wanted "our rankings to cover as many different educational, social and other aspects of college life as possible." Among the criteria was that the school be listed in one of the three leading college guides currently published, have relatively high academic standards and offer a range of different degrees. The pool of universities that fit that criteria was 747, according to Newsweek.

Last week, U-M came in at No. 15 in the QS World University rankings, improving from 19 on last year's list.

U-M spokesman Rick Fitzgerald said it's always gratifying to be ranked among the best colleges and universities but "rankings are never the best way for a student to pick a university."
