U-M pep rally brings out fans, players, Mary Sue Coleman and a celebrity or two

By Courtney Sacco

University of Michigan students and fans gathered on the Diag for a pep rally Friday night ahead of the Wolverines' game against Notre Dame Saturday.

They heard from Head Coach Brady Hoke, U-M president Mary Sue Coleman and football players and they were treated to a performance by former Michigan Student and "Glee" star Darren Criss.

I wonder if Mary Sue understands even the basics of football?

I hope not - she is the president of a university, not an entertainment network

Why would that matter? The CEO of most organizations do not need to know the details of everything they oversee. I bet she knows very little about open heart surgery, court procedure or astrophysics, or the solar race car team for engineering, but she stills wishes them well and knows these are UM students. The funny part is, if you talked to many people who have played or coached football, I bet they would say the same thing about YOU.

Why would you wonder that? She's a brilliant woman, more than capable of understanding the dynamic game of football. Not to mention she is involved in most major decisions regarding the team and the games.

Through the 1960's (and several decades previous I was told), there was no U of M pep rallying without Hazel Losh of the astronomy department and other faculty cheering on their students. For professors were teachers and athletes were students.

Well, Book Lover, Doc Losh assigned us a paper to be written in rhymed verse; I still have mine on which she noted, "This is the best verse and most substance since before the war." No athlete, I got a "B+".

Legend was that her grading system was A for athlete, B for boy, and C for coed. My mother had her for a class in the 50s - got a C.
