U-M police investigating sexual assault at West Quad

By AnnArbor.com Freelance Journalist

A University of Michigan student told police Sunday she was sexually assaulted at West Quadrangle residence hall by a man who escorted her home from a party.

The incident took place between 12:45 and 1:30 a.m. in a lower level common area of the dormitory, the U-M Department of Public Safety said. The student told police she had just met the assailant at an off-campus party and that he had walked her home when the assault took place.

The suspect is described as a 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-8 Asian male with short, dark hair.

Anyone with information is asked to call U-M police at (734) 763-1131.

Does the victim have a name of the assailant? Even if they had just met at the party, I would think she would have gotten a name before allowing him to walk her home? Just wondering if the name is being withheld for some reason...

I recall a series of sexual harassment and potential assaults in September with a lone male matching this description around campus. I don't think he was ever caught. Could it be the same guy?

"5-foot-6 to 5-foot-8 Asian male" Well, is he a boy or a man? What is his approx age? 15, 21, or 50? Oh, not silly if we wanna catch him. If he is a man, say so.

From the story: 'The student told police she had just met the assailant at an off-campus party and that he had walked her home...' I doubt she would get walked home from a college party by a 15 year old or a 50 year old.

First paragraph, 20th word: "...student told police Sunday she was sexually assaulted at West Quadrangle residence hall by a MAN..." You really are silly.

There always seems to be so much negativity when a description is released. What do you want them to do? Not release this information? I agree it's not very descriptive but you never know what small details could help.

BTW, interesting that the headline doesn't read "Police investigating alleged sexual assault at West Quad."

That's because when it comes to rape in this country, sadly, the suspect is ALWAYS assumed to be guilty until proven innocent.

"The suspect is described as a 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-8 Asian male with short, dark hair." ...which accurately describes basically EVERY Asian man on campus, including myself. Extremely helpful.

Wehrwolf...where you last night from 12:45-1:30

It's a valid description. So what should they do... only describe anything not average?

Hey... at least you won't have to deal with stop and frisk as a result of matching the description.

If the location of the partly was included, then some tips might come in. Great police work. I hope they already know who the alleged suspect is since putting out this description is pretty much worthless.

Gee, so now we get some details and people don't like it being reported? Can't win sometimes. I feel the better we are informed of what is going on the better. Don't like it, stop reading the news. Hoping for a quick arrest, anybody who knows anything-no matter how minor it might seem-please inform the local police

The description would fit 1/2 of the Asian population in A2. I sometimes think that a paper is better off WAITING until they have more facts of a case before publishing it.

Any Asian description would fit 1/2 of the Asian population.

Some news is better than no news, even if incomplete. I can see the masses screaming if AA.com waited until total, accurate info was available.

While I don't have any information on any Asian males of average height and nondescript hair, I'll keep my eye out. They're pretty rare around here -
