U-M receives $21M grant to be put toward funding Center for HIV RNA Studies

By Cole Bertsos

A $21 million federal grant was awarded to the University of MIchigan to create the Center for HIV RNA Studies, according to a news release.

The center will emphasize gaining a better understanding of the HIV-1 RNA molecule, which plays a big part in the ability of the virus to reproduce itself. Researchers hope studying the molecule will lead to more effective and innovative treatments for AIDS, as well as other diseases.

The National Institutes of Health grant will be used to take a multidisciplinary approach to researching the disease. The team will include leaders in the fields of structural biology, chemistry, cell and computation biology, molecular biology and virology.

The grant will be funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences.
