U-M student killed Monday night on I-94 near Belleville

By John Counts

A 20-year-old Bloomfield Township man died when he was struck by a semi truck while reportedly walking across Interstate 94 in Van Buren Township Monday around 10:30 p.m., the Belleville View reports.

George Orley, a University of Michigan student, was pronounced dead at the scene by Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office investigators, the report said.

A witness told police Orley parked his vehicle on the right shoulder of the freeway, got out and attempted to walk across I-94 into oncoming traffic, according to the newspaper story.

The report indicates the Michigan State Police are still investigating the incident.

The U-M web directory, MCommunity, lists Orley as an undergraduate in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts.

My condolensces go out to the family, and very much to the driver of the truck. People should not be questioning whether the truck driver "attempted to avoid". That is cruel, no driver is expecting someone to walk into traffic at night on I-94. Where is your heart?

The autopsy report will be very interesting, especially the toxicology reports. I wonder why he pulled off to the side of the road. I wonder if his vehicle was out or gas or had some mechanical problem or maybe he did not feel well. In either case, I do not know why he did not use his cell phone to call for assistance. Also I wonder if the truck driver reported that the victim recognized the vehicle bearing down on him and if he made any attempt to get out of its way.

Please note that I should have inserted the name "George Orley" instead of "he" in my last sentence. I apologize for the confusion which I created that led to a subsequent critical comment.

All my questions should eventually have answers except perhaps how he was feeling just prior to his death. If he made any cell phone calls prior to walking into traffic then those who spoke with him may be able to provide insight into his state of mind and whether he was sick.

Dear Orley Parents... I know exactly what you are experiencing. My son died unexpectedly 2years ago and the questions never get answered. My heart goes out to you. No parent should be burying their child.

We drove past the accident Monday night on the west bound side while coming home from the Tiger's game. The police were shutting the highway down and routing people down the service drive. We could see the tarp covered body in the road. It was very sad. Condolences to the family.

Again read the Belleville View story. No Rocket Science needed for a conclusion.

Don't be too quick to make an assumption when you don't have all of the facts.

Oh no, how sad. Thoughts go to his family...all set to see him continuing school and then to have this happen.
