University of Michigan student sucker-punched Notre Dame student, Ann Arbor police say

By Lee Higgins

Ann Arbor police detectives are seeking charges against a University of Michigan student they say sucker-punched a University of Notre Dame student Sept. 12, leaving him with facial injuries.

Det. Sgt. Brian Jatczak said investigators have requested the 21-year-old be charged with aggravated assault in the attack, which occurred 90 minutes before the schools played football against each other.

The 20-year-old victim told police he believes he was assaulted because he was wearing a shirt bearing his university's name.

Detectives have submitted their findings to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor's Office for review, but no charges have been filed yet.

The victim was taken to the U-M Hospital with a laceration to his upper lip and a swollen nose after the 2 p.m. assault at State Street and McKinley Avenue. He later reportedly underwent reconstructive surgery.

The victim was with a 25-year-old male friend who attends U-M when the attack occurred.

Thanks Amalie. OK, Rrrrrrrrodney, but the story says aggravated assault, not simple battery. Sounds like it may be a tad more involved than you think. Maybe they have some evidence of intent...

ypsijake, this was reported earlier but I can't find the earlier story because A2.com doesn't tag their stories consistently or effectively. At any case, it doesn't really matter what the story was if he hit someone. That's assault.

Dream on, buck1; the UM student body has its share of thugs, trust me on this.

are there cameras all around or what? how did police find this suspect? i doubt he told the victim his name. and perhaps he was provoked. i'd like to know his side of the story. seems to me a bit late in reporting this story as well.

This was a stupid stupid thing to do. Hopefully, the student learns a lesson that benefits him in life.
