The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti are among six in the state that have been selected to participate in a program to develop math, science, engineering and technology teachers for urban areas.

The Woodrow Wilson Michigan Teaching Fellowship aims to prepare 240 teachers starting in 2011. The W.K. Kellogg Foundation is providing nearly $17 million for the effort.

School districts involved are in Detroit, Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, Benton Harbor and Grand Rapids.

The other four participating universities are Michigan State University, Western Michigan University, Grand Valley State University and Wayne State University.

The program was highlighted Wednesday by President Barack Obama and will be discussed by Gov. Jennifer Granholm during a Thursday press conference.
