University of Michigan focuses on in-classroom training for teachers

By Cindy Heflin

The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor is revamping its training program for teachers to focus on what teachers have to do, not just what they have to know, a story featured on the National Public Radio program "All Things Considered" says. The story is part of NPR's series "Lesson Plans: What Makes a Great Teacher."

"The program overhaul — an ongoing process that began five years ago — is called the Teacher Education Initiative," the story says. "It will cut the number of classes students must take, and it will turn time in the classroom into an experience that is tightly focused on problem solving."

Professor Robert Bain compares the revamped program to medical or law school. The program includes visits to several schools where students learn "to analyze various teaching problems in different settings," the story says.
