University of Michigan health system on U.S. News and World Report's honor roll

By Tina Reed

The University of Michigan is on the U.S. News and World Report's list of top hospitals, according to the 2010-2011 Best Hospitals rankings released this morning.

U-M ranked 14 on the honor roll of the top 14 hospitals, meaning it ranked highly in six or more of its specialties.

Only 0.03 percent of U.S. hospitals appear on the honors list, according to a description of the rankings. U-M ranked 14 on the honor roll of hospitals last year as well, but that list was 21 hospitals deep.

Of the nearly 5,000 hospitals considered in the best hospitals report, 152 received a best hospitals recognition for one of the 16 specialties ranked.

U-M ranked 9th in the nation for its ear, nose and throat specialty care and 13th in the nation for its cancer specialty care.

In June, U-M's C.S. Mott Children's Hospital ranked fourth in the nation for its pediatric heart and heart surgery care in U.S. News and World Report's America's Best Children's Hospitals issue.
