University of Michigan named to 'best workplaces' list

By AnnArbor.com Staff

The University of Michigan was named to the Chronicle of Higher Education’s "Great Colleges to Work For" list, which was announced Monday.

According to the University Record, U-M "was recognized in the following areas:

 • Compensation and Benefits — Pay is fair, and benefits meet the needs of employees.
 • Job Satisfaction and Support — Provides insight into employee satisfaction with job fit, autonomy and resources.
 • Tenure Clarity and Process — Requirements for tenure are clear, faculty members say."

U-M employs 24,900 people in Ann Arbor, with an additional 14,704 at the hospitals, according to 2010 data.

Good grief, strike up the violin music. These folks don't know what a hard day's work is. Let them work on an assembly line or steel mill like REAL union members do.

Try getting a copy of the Plant Operations internal surveys and you will receive another view. While most of those workers generally like working at the U, this particular department's internal survey paint a completely opposite picture.

Yeah, yeah, yeah - Tell that to the poor U of M staff who receive tiny raises, average benefits and little support, while the higher ups (Coleman being the biggest culprit) get big raises, benefits and obviously support their own. There something completely bogus about a survey like this. Well you only have to look at who conducted this charade in the first place - Chronicle of Higher Learning.

The absence of the number of UM employees that participated, broken down by demographic groups (professors, staff, etc) and results by group, make things like this useless. One company I worked with DID breakout results by dept and the wide variation was eye opening.

So, to the few nurses and those here who disagree, I guess I'd suggest quitting and moving on then. I am sure there are hundreds of qualified candidates for each newly vacant position who would love to get each job and would gratefully accept it with a joyful and positive attitude !

Have a reading problem David? My comment referred to qualified candidates who would love to replace those who are so miserable in theirs that they clearly couldn't perform up to top levels anyway.

So Rob, yes I believe in the "Race to the Bottom" theory too, I just don't condone it!

I think if you are a perfesser, doctor, dean, football or basketball coach then you are likely happy with your compensation. The rest of the UM employees know they are getting screwed....paying hundreds of dollars a year to park to get to their job, getting 30-40% lower than industry average pay, and working in a city overrun with people from OUT OF TOWN trying to steal their wallet.

Seriously, I take working at UM any day over where my husband works. Like others have said, it really depends on your bosses, your job, and any number of other factors. I've worked at UM for 22 years and I still love going to work every day there even if every day isn't a bed of roses.

"perfesser"? Is that a new job? Does it also require paranoia?

Lists like these are bogus. 24,900 staff are going to have such a vast array of experiences in every area that there is no way that people's experiences can be summed up as a whole. I know so many people who work at U-M, and some of them love it and some of them hate it. Also, there are 42 colleges in each category, out of thousands of colleges in the US. Who knows where U-M falls in the total spectrum on those categories they were not named i n. @tresspass, you seem pretty disgruntled at U-M, so be sure to register for the 2011 study at http://chroniclegreatcolleges.com/.

They got mentioned in 3 categories out of 12. Here are some of the categories that they did not get ranked in; Leadership 1. Collaborative Governance 2. Confidence in senior leadership 3. Supervisor or Chairman relationship Compensation 4. Respect and appreciation Careers 5. Professional/Careeer development 6. Teaching environment The workplace 7. Diversity 8. Facilities, workspace, security 9. Work life balance So if you expect no respect or appreciation, you want to hate your boss, you want to be powerless, you want no career development, a poor teaching environment, no diversity, poor facilities and no time for a private life then UM is the place for you. I don't think I have ever seen a more misleading headline in an AA.com piece.

Beg to differ on the job satisfaction and support. The support is in question.
