By Cindy Heflin

The University of Michigan grabbed a spot on Kiplinger's list of 100 Best Values in Public Colleges 2011. U-M came in at No. 22 on the list while the Michigan State University was ranked 39th.

Kiplinger said its list identifies the public schools that "deliver the best BA for the buck."

Actually, Marshall, I believe that Merit should be rewarded. But a Meritorious bank robber deserves a special reward! BTW, Nice photo! Will you print the signs that signify "We're #22"?

Measures of academic quality they use are: "SAT/ ACT scores, admission and retention rates, student-faculty ratios, and four- and six-year graduation rates" None of those factors tell you much about the quality of education offered by a school.

David Briegel, After reading the majority of your comments on here, I'm very surprised that you're willing to use rankings and merit based calculations.

It shows how bad the university system in Michigan has fallen. Only UM and MSU were on the list. Northern, Tech, EMU, WMU, Wayne State, SVSU, GVSU, CMU no mention. But there are only 100 schools on the list and 50 states in the country -- how many would you expect per state? And keep in mind that this is a list of 'best values' not 'best schools'. Given that Michigan has fallen from something like 18th to 37th in state income levels, it's just not surprising that Michigan can't afford to subsidize tuition at state universities as much as other states can.
