Update: Campus police arrest man suspected of robbing University of Michigan student outside South Quad

A University of Michigan student was robbed outside the South Quad residence hall just before noon today, campus police said.

The student was walking along the sidewalk next to the residence hall in the 600 block of East Madison Street when a man grabbed him at 11:45 a.m., according to a campus crime alert issued this evening.

The stranger pulled the student several feet off the sidewalk and demanded money, the alert said. After the student gave up his cash, the robber ran westbound on Madison Street.

Those who witnessed the incident described the robber as black with a dark complexion, about 30 years old, 6 feet tall, with a medium to muscular build and a protruding brow bone. He was wearing a short-sleeve shirt; light-colored, knee-length shorts; and light-colored sandals with buckles. He also had a cord around his neck that held keys and a yellow card that police said was not an MCard.

Anyone with information is asked to call campus police at 734-763-1131.

Absolutely not a gun control advocate, but a lack of guns really is not the *fundamental* cause of our crime problems. It makes it easier for these underlying issues to be realized in the form of a robbery, but nothing more...

Ah the "wild west / ok corral" myth raising it's uninformed head. Just recently there was an article on crime being at an all time low. (I still wonder if that's not somewhat an under and mis reporting issue a la New York's 81st Precinct or OCCC's). Since Obama's election gun ownership is at an all time high. Your "PEW! PEW! PEW!" is often lamented but never seems to come to pass...

No I'm suggesting that all law abiding, background checked, trained and licensed adults shouldn't be prevented from being able to defend themselves wherever they have a right to be. Clearly criminals can be anywhere without those same restrictions. 1*

hmmm....why would a robber pull a student off the quad to rob him in broad daylight??? Couldn't possibly be because they know they have nothing to fear from the victims there....nah
