University of Michigan students studying in Egypt expected to come home today
Several University of Michigan students who were studying in Egypt this semester are expected to be flown home today on charter flights, university officials said.
As protests against the Egyptian government grow and there are more clashes in the street between protesters and the Army, the United States has begun to fly Americans out of the Egypt.
Those who are being airlifted are expected to go to one of several different European countries and then make their way back to the United States.
John Godfrey, assistant dean for international education in the Rackham School of Graduate Studies, explained the situation to the university's Record Update for a story published this morning.
Godfrey said a program at American University of Cairo that included three U-M students has been canceled. Four other U-M students were participating in an American Councils for International Education program in Alexandria.

It's quite a mess over there in Egypt for American students. My nephew (a U.S. citizen) is enrolled at the American Univ. in Cairo and they've suspended classes for a week at a minimum. And there's a possibility that they may suspend classes for the rest of the semester. So, my sister is trying to find a way to get him home using the airline ticket he already has. Suspended flights are making this a lot harder, as is the fact the U.S. embassy is advising Americans to NOT approach the embassy due to the risks from the roving mobs of protesters. Again, quite a mess.
