Drivers in Northfield Township to encounter lane closures, detours for Eight Mile Road bridge repair

By Heather Lockwood

Drivers in Northfield Township will encounter lane closures and detours on US-23 and Eight Mile Road starting on Monday for repair work on the Eight Mile Road bridge.

Work on the bridge is expected to wrap up by the end of January, but weather could delay completion until mid-February.

Following is a schedule of road closures and detours in the coming week:

• Beginning Monday drivers on westbound 8 Mile will be detoured and single lane closures will be in place on southbound US-23 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. The detour will remain in place for the duration of the project along with the closure of the shoulder on southbound US-23.

• From 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday a single lane of southbound US-23 will be closed. Beginning at 11 p.m., southbound US-23 will be closed and traffic will be redirected over 8 Mile Road via the ramps until 5 a.m. Eastbound 8 Mile Road will also be detoured during the full closure. Signals will be changed and police will be in the area for traffic control.

• The schedule of closures from Tuesday will be repeated Wednesday.

• From 8 p.m. Thursday until 5 a.m. Friday single lane closures will be in place on southbound US-23.

I checked the date of this article twice. Road construction in January? Next I checked the extended forecast for over a week. Minimal chance of precipitation and high temperatures in the low 30s. Is the weather just good enough for the bridge repairs? Usually road repairs are done when there's more daylight. But some summer repairs are done at night, too.
