Veterans Day events and celebrations in the area

Following is a roundup of Veterans Day events in the Washtenaw County area. To add an event, email AnnDwyer@annarbor.com:

SUNDAY, NOV. 11

• Veterans and those currently serving their country will be honored guests again this year at St. Andrew's United Church of Christ in Dexter. 10 a.m. Veterans will be recognized as they stand at the presentation of the flags of each of the military branches. The anthem of each branch will be played as they are honored. A special presentation of the Prisoner of War/Missing in Action flag will be made as those who were prisoners or missing in action are honored. Patriotic hymns will be sung by the choir and the congregation and a message for the service will be presented. At the close of the ceremony, "Taps" will be played. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall. 7610 Ann Arbor St., Dexter.

• Attend the Veterans Day Ceremony at Wilson Park in Milan. 1:30 p.m. Citizens, organizations, and church groups have come together this year to help celebrate our men and women who have served in America’s Armed Forces. Each group will contribute to the celebration, which will include presentation of the new names engraved on the Veterans Wall of Honor this year. Free. Wabash St., Milan. 734-439-1549.

• Leslie Science & Nature Center will have a Veterans Day event. 2 p.m. They will honor veterans with a program, photos with their bald eagle, and a ribbon cutting of their new accessible pathways and eagle enclosure. Visit www.lesliesnc.org/ or call 734-997-1553 for more details. • The Chelsea District Library will premiere “Korean War Veterans,” a documentary collection of interviews with Chelsea Korean War Veterans, at the Chelsea Comfort Inn. • The Dexter Community Band will perform a Veterans Day Concert at the Dexter Center for the Performing Arts, Dexter High School. 3 p.m. Bill Gourley directs this 85-member volunteer ensemble (in costume) in a program highlighted by Randoll A. Bass’s A New Birth of Freedom, with a narration of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. Also, Morten Gould’s American Salute, Carmen Dragon’s arrangement of Samuel Ward’s America, Jay Bocook’s arrangement of John Williams’ Liberty Fanfare, Roger Holmes’ arrangement of Lee Greenwood’s God Bless the U.S.A., Bob Lowden’s arrangement of the Armed Forces Salute, and 2 Sousa marches, “Liberty Bell March” and “Stars and Stripes Forever.” Free. 2200 N. Parker at Shield, Dexter. 734-426-2734. • The Saline New Horizons Band will offer a Veterans Tribute Concert at the Saline Middle School Auditorium. 4 p.m. This local senior band is joined by the lively 90-member local men’s chorus Measure for Measure in a program of patriotic music. • Many restaurants and retailers offer deals and discounts to Veterans on Veteran's Day. Go to militarybenefits.info/veterans-day-discounts-sales-deals-free-meals/ for a roundup. The Michigan Theater also offers free admission to all veterans and active-duty service members.

MONDAY, NOV. 12

• The Veterans Administration Ann Arbor Healthcare System presents its annual Veterans Day Program at 9:30 a.m. Governor Rick Snyder, U.S. Rep John D. Dingell, Major General Gregory Vadnais and a Coast Guard rescue helicopter flyover will all be part of the event, along with the VAAAHS and the University of Michigan Tri-Service ROTC. The observance takes place at the VA Ann Arbor Medical Center (Circle Drive), 2215 Fuller Road.

• Concordia University will host a Veterans Day Celebration. 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. There will be patriotic music performances by the Concordia Choir and the Concordia Band, flag presentations, a chapel service, lunch with a speaker TBA from Selfridge Air National Guard Base and more. I'll be at Leslie on Monday. Can't wait to see that new Eagle enclosure. Yes, to the vets and those who served at home as well. Stand tall and brave.

Indeed, all please go out and support our veterans who have given so much for our freedoms. Thank you to all those who are sponsoring events -- I know they are much appreciated.

Also, on Sunday all Applebees offer a free meal to veterans, and I know that many other stores/restaurants have similar offers this weekend.
