Vote on Pittsfield Township police contract delayed
The Pittsfield Township Board of Trustees didn't vote on a series of tentative contract agreements with labor unions representing public safety department employees as planned Wednesday.
Township Supervisor Mandy Grewal asked for the final votes on contracts with patrol officers, command officers and dispatchers to be removed from the meeting agenda Wednesday while union officials review the pacts.
She said she didn't anticipate problems with the proposed contracts, which took several months to negotiate. But she said union officials told her their members hadn't had enough time to thoroughly review the language.
The township board unanimously approved the tentative agreements at its last meeting after a lengthy closed session with attorneys and other negotiators. The five-year deal for patrol officers included a wage freeze for the first part of the contract, with an option to renegotiate terms in 2012, township officials said.
The beginning wage for an officer starting in 2010 is $39,791, and will be capped at $57,331 after five years.

The Pittsfield Township Public Safety Officers are a wonderful group of people, and we are fortunate to have them as an integral part of our community. I appreciate the work done by the Washtenaw County Human Resources department in negotiating the contracts. This is one of many ways we can share resources between the county and local governments to save taxpayers money.
