Washtenaw County employees will be collecting school supplies at the end of this month to mark the beginning of their 2012 United Way campaign.

The collected school supplies will be stuffed into a full-sized school bus 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 30 to Aug. 3.

The bus will be located at the Target store at 3749 Carpenter Road in Pittsfield Township.

Students in need enrolled in Washtenaw County Public School Districts will receive the supplies.

Suggested items for donation include: pencils, mechanical pencils, pens, hi-lighters, colored pencils, crayons, pencil sharpeners, erasers, protractors, rulers, calculators, index cards, three-ring binders, folders, composition books, display boards for science fair projects and backpacks.

“Washtenaw County employees have always had a strong commitment to public service,” said Washtenaw County Administrator Verna McDaniel in a statement. “It is this commitment that has inspired them to continue to support the remarkable mission of the United Way.”

I look forward to this every year and have fun shopping for school supplies. I don't understand why you don't report on how many kids get the supplies, after school year is over does it stay with the kids or stay with the school, which schools needs the most, and what are the teachers asking for?
