Washtenaw County GOP chairman endorses Brian Rooney for Michigan's 7th Congressional District

By Ryan J. Stanton

Mark Boonstra, chairman of the Washtenaw County Republican Committee, today announced his endorsement of Brian Rooney in Michigan’s 7th Congressional District race.

“I am proud to endorse Brian Rooney for Congress,” Boonstra in a written statement. “Brian represents the future of the Republican Party in Michigan, and has demonstrated that he is the best candidate not only to take on and defeat Mark Schauer in November, but to hold that seat for years to come. His dedication to conservative values, combined with his service to our country in the Marine Corps and his experience as a constitutional attorney, sets him apart from other candidates in this race."

Rooney said in a written statement of his own that he is deeply honored and proud to accept Boonstra’s support.

“Since I started my campaign just over six months ago, I’ve had the opportunity to talk with many families in Washtenaw County and around the district about the issues that matter to them most," he said. "I’ve been greatly encouraged by their thirst for common sense conservative solutions and humbled by their support for my campaign. I am truly grateful for Chairman Boonstra’s support and endorsement. With the help of leaders like him, we will bring new leadership and a truly representative voice to Washington.”

Rooney is one of three Republicans who have lined up in the 7th District race for Congress for a chance to oust Democratic incumbent Mark Schauer in November. Rooney faces off against fellow Republicans Marvin Carlson and Tim Walberg in the Aug. 3 primary.

Schauer faces no challengers in the primary.

After the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Rooney renewed his commitment to the Marine Corps and served in combat in Iraq from 2004 to 2005. Since leaving the Corps, he has worked as an attorney at the Thomas More Law Center, a nonprofit public interest law firm that works to protect religious freedom and promote a strong national defense.

Schauer does not have a chance to keep his seat. He has made it clear that Pelosi's agenda trumps the needs and interests of his constituents. I can't wait for November 2.

The Washtenaw GOP leadership is anything but neutral to the exclusion of new ideas and fresh faces, content to control only a small and relatively meaningless corner of the county ring around the Saline area.

Hmmmmmmm thought that the party leadership was neutral in the primary. The good ol boy network is alive and well still in the Washtenaw GOP.
