Washtenaw County sheriff's deputy arrests man suspected in at least 10 indecent exposure cases

By Amalie Nash

Washtenaw County sheriff's deputies arrested a 47-year-old man early today who is believed to be linked to at least 10 indecent exposure cases, mainly in western Washtenaw County, dating back to January.

Officials say the man lives in East Tawas but has been staying in the area on a regular basis and would drive his van up to homes late at night and expose himself in front of women and children.

The man, whose name has not been released, is expected to be charged with aggravated indecent exposure, sheriff's spokesman Derrick Jackson said. But he is currently having a psychological evaluation based on information that emerged during the investigation, Jackson said.

The man was arrested around midnight in Lima Township following a report of an indecent exposure in the 8000 block of Beechwood Boulevard. Deputy Mark Mesko, recognizing the description matched cases in the Dexter area, headed to that area near Jackson and Parker roads, Jackson said.

A Ford minivan matching the description passed Mesko's patrol car near an intersection, and he stopped the driver, Jackson said. The driver was arrested without incident and made statements implicating himself in several cases, Jackson said.

"It was a really good catch," Jackson said. "Deputy Mesko rushed over to the neighborhood and got to the corner in time for him to pass right by."

The man is believed to be responsible for multiple indecent exposure cases, including one in Stockbridge, one in Chelsea, two in Ann Arbor, two in Dexter Township, one in Webster Township, two in Scio Township and the one in Lima Township late Monday.

Jackson said police are still investigating his possible involvement in other cases. "We believe he's tied to almost every single incident (in recent months) in this area," he said.

The man doesn't have a criminal history, Jackson said. Jackson did not have any information on whether the suspect has a family or job.

Police will seek charges from prosecutors after the psychological evaluation is complete, Jackson said.

Thank you Deputy Mesko. A young person close to me was potentially impacted by this crazy man and we will all rest better knowing his career is finished.

Great way to discourage these guys? Snap a photo of them -- or their car and license plate -- with your cell phone! (It's difficult to have the presence of mind when someone does this to you -- but very helpful to police.)
