Washtenaw Intermediate School District selects two finalists for open superintendent position

By Kyle Feldscher

The Washtenaw Intermediate School District Board of Education has selected Thomas Goodney and Scott Menzel as the two finalists for the open superintendent position.

Goodney is the deputy superintendent and chief of staff at the Educational Service Center of Central Ohio and Menzel is the current superintendent of the Livingston Educational Service Agency.

Both finalists will return to the WISD for a second interview. Goodney is scheduled to be in the district on April 13 and Menzel will be in the district on April 14. Interviews will take place at 6 p.m. on those days and a team from the WISD will visit the finalists’ districts during the week of April 18.

Goodney and Menzel were among six candidates interviewed by the board during the past two weeks.

Goodney has been serving as superintendent of the Educational Service Center of Central Ohio for six years. He has a bachelor’s degree in mass communication from Northern Michigan University, a master’s degree in speech and a doctorate in educational leadership from Miami (Ohio) University.

Menzel has been serving as superintendent of the Livingston Educational Service Agency for four years. He received a bachelor’s degree in religion from Vanguard University in California, his master’s degree in philosophy and social policy from American University in Washington D.C. and is completing work on his doctorate at Eastern Michigan University.

The WISD board is filling the position vacated by William Miller’s retirement at the end of December after 12 years of serving as superintendent.

Wishing the the new WISD superintendent well. In these economic times with much strife between management and educators, it will be tough. AAPS has a new superintendent stepping into a quagmire of difficulty as teachers who can't be laid off are about to be placed in subjects or levels they have never taught, possibly against the contract language, with bad feelings all the way around.
