Washtenaw Technical Middle College Top Scholars

Washtenaw Technical Middle College held its 2013 graduation ceremonies May 19, 4 p.m. on the campus of Washtenaw Community College Morris Lawrence Building. The class included 108 graduates.

Paul Akande
Parents: Lawrence and Margaret Akande
Activities and Awards: Paul graduated summa cum laude from Washtenaw Community College (WCC) with a General Studies in Math and Natural Sciences Associate in Science Degree. He completed 81 college credits while attending Washtenaw Technical Middle College (WTMC). Paul was a member of WTMC’s Ultimate Frisbee team, Air Raid, for three years and received the Most Improved Player award his first year and became a co-captain his third year. Paul was a peer mentor his second year and helped an incoming student adjust to the college curriculum. Paul was one of two representatives for WTMC at MYLead: a three-day leadership conference on the campus of Michigan State University. After this conference, Paul began volunteering at Emmanuel House in Ypsilanti. Paul was a member of Eastern Michigan’s Upward Bound program for four years and benefited heavily from their financial and educational support. He was invited to speak on behalf of Upward Bound in front of several members of the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Regional Chamber of Commerce. He had the opportunity to live on the campus of EMU and take classes for six weeks the summer before his sophomore year. Paul participated in Digital Inclusion on the campus of EMU and learned how to troubleshoot and repair computers, including one that he repaired himself and took home. That same summer, Paul also stayed on the campus of U of M for almost two weeks when he participated in SCEEP: Summer College Engineering Exposure Program.
Plans After Graduation: Paul plans to attend the University of Michigan and major in mechanical engineering.

Hasan Ali
Parents: Nusrat and Khatija Ali
Activities and Awards: Hasan graduated summa cum laude from Washtenaw Community College (WCC) with a General Studies in Math and Natural Sciences Associate in Science Degree. He completed 80 college credits while attending Washtenaw Technical Middle College (WTMC). He is a member of Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society and has made the Dean's List every semester while attending WTMC and WCC. Hasan also helped start the WCC cricket club in Spring 2011 as well as volunteered at the American Red Cross, University of Michigan Hospital, and St. Joseph Hospital.
Plans After Graduation: Hasan will be attending the University of Michigan to study biomedical engineering.

Emily Beitz
Parents: Jeffrey and Becky Beitz
Activities and Awards: Emily is graduated summa cum laude from Washtenaw Community College with a Certificate and Associate Degree in the medical administrative assistant field. She earned 82 college credits while attending Washtenaw Technical Middle College. She frequently received honors certificates during the course of her high school career. Every month she could, she made it a goal to spend 50 hours devoted to volunteer work.
Plans After Graduation: Emily plans to spend even more time volunteering. She also plans to find a job in the administrative side of the medical field to support herself in these efforts.

Clare Firn
Parents: Joseph and Mary Firn
Activities and Awards: Clare graduated summa cum laude from Washtenaw Community College (WCC) with an Associate of Arts Degree in Liberal Arts Transfer, completing 76 college credits while attending Washtenaw Technical Middle College (WTMC). She was honored to be on the Dean’s List all three years of her attendance at WCC. For the past two years, Clare volunteered two days a week at an after school enrichment program for children at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. There she tutored children five through thirteen in various academic subjects as well as in beginning violin, which Clare began learning two years ago. She was on the planning team for her Christian youth group for the past two years.
Plans After Graduation: Clare plans to work as a secretary this summer and also travel to Brazil for World Youth Day. This coming fall Clare will be taking classes at WCC, doing planned exploring in areas of interest.

Eman Jacksi
Parents: Nazar and Viyan Jacksi
Activities and Awards: Eman graduated summa cum laude from Washtenaw Community College (WCC) with an Associate of Science Degree in General Studies in Math and Sciences and a Health Care Foundations Certificate. She completed 83 college credits while attending Washtenaw Technical Middle College (WTMC). She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society and made the Dean's High Honors List every semester while attending WTMC. Outside of school, Eman enjoys volunteering, and has done so for a local daycare, Wild Swan Theaters, and St. Joseph Mercy Hospital through high school. She is also an active member of the WCC Muslim Student Association and has helped organize fundraisers as well as various additional events. Eman participated in the Summer Science Academy at the University of Michigan and was recently accepted into the Michigan Biology Academy Scholars Program (M-Bio Program).
Plans After Graduation: Eman will be attending the University of Michigan College of Literature Science and the Arts, majoring in biomedical engineering.

Josiah Wilseck
Parents: Timothy & Andrea Wilseck
Activities and Awards: Josiah graduated summa cum laude from Washtenaw Community College (WCC) with a Liberal Arts Transfer Associate Degree and an Associate’s Degree in Broadcast Arts. Josiah earned 79 college credits and achieved a perfect 4.0 grade point average throughout his time at WTMC and WCC. Josiah is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society and has made the Academic Dean's List with High Honors every semester he was eligible. During his time at Washtenaw, Josiah produced and ran a live radio show at WCC’s Orchard Radio station as well as worked as an intern at a local radio station.
Plans After Graduation: Josiah will be attending Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas and plans to study Sports Journalism.
