Water main break slows traffic at Geddes and Huron Parkway

By AnnArbor.com Staff

A water main break on Sunday morning will slow traffic at Geddes and Huron Parkway in Ann Arbor, officials said.

The break was reported around 10 a.m., when emergency water department crews were called to the scene.

A full repair crew was then called in when it was determined that more work was needed than a temporary fix.

The southbound lane of Huron Parkway will be closed Sunday as the repair gets under way.

Further details were not available.

Yes, Ann Arbor can get a new expensive fountain in front of city hall, but they cant fix the Geddes/Huron Parkway flooding problems that have plagued that area since moved here in the late 70's!

How long has Heiftje been Mayor? Why has all our $$$ been spent on frivolous art projects and other less needed items (underground parking, wasted money on transportation center at wrong location, etc). You can be certain as soon as he is voted in again, there will be a big push for a city tax or another increase in our property taxes. It's enough to make one move outside city limits!!

Something tells me this isn't the last time this is going to happen. Hope everyone enjoy the nice smooth road while they could because if they patch this one like the rest of them you might catch some air going thru the intersection.

I wonder if this affects the plans for the new John Hieftje Transportation Center?

Absolutely not. This will be paid for with increases in the water and sewer rates.

I'd like to know whose job it is to monitor these problems and then to act when one small stretch of pipe such as this one along Geddes between Huron Pkwy and 23 has repeated breaks. Wouldn't it make sense to replace it once rather than patching it over and over again? If someone is not falling down on the job, we'd like to know what the reasoning is.

patches and overtime are much cheaper then a full replacement.

I travel this stretch of road daily. There have been many water main breaks in the same general area of the roadway. Worse yet, the most recent break was clearly visible during the middle of the work week. Nothing like waiting until Sunday for the "report" that brings the crews the over time they were looking for.

That's bad news, brimble. I kind of wish they'd put the $1,000,000+ money they used to relocate pipes for the (unecessary and then also not done) new train station into things that actually needed repair. I wonder how much water main replacement you can do for $750,000 (one art piece), or $56,000,000 (big dig, at least what we KNOW of), or $100,000 (was that the art piece cost for the one thing INSIDE City Hall?), or $51,000,000 (that we KNOW about) for the brand new Justice Center, or the money going into renovating the OLD city hall now that there's a new one, or the money spent on studies to see if we should have trolley cars, or...well, you know. Of course, one of the things standing in the way is buckets.

The water, sewer and stormwater systems in Ann Arbor are an (mostly) unseen crisis in the making. The City has deferred maintenance for decades, and we're going to pay the hard way coming up. Ask any incumbent Council member or the Mayor about whether they think this is a priority, and if it is, what their plan to manage it is. You'll then be flooded in double-speak.

Is anyone keeping count of the water main breaks on Geddes? I count this as 5 in the last 2 years, the last 3 of which happened after repaving (and I believe that stretch was repaves twice). Have the people who drive this road noticed the big lumpy patches in the pavement? IIRC, water main problems happened 3 times in the same area near the top of that rise driving up towards 23. Is this main breaking in different places every time? Lot of money going into this road without seeming to fix problems. Also, has anyone else noticed how much roadkill is around the city, and how long it stays there? I recall reading about the city contracting with a different place to handle roadkill, but it sure seems to me like they're not handling it. It looks to me like birds do the heavy lifting. How much are we paying the new place again?

I was about to post the same thing. I think it happens more time then not. I remember in May they had it shut down due to the breaks.
