A water pipe broke in Michigan Stadium on Thursday evening, causing electrical damage and water damage to carpet and ceiling tiles, officials said.

Diane Brown, a campus police spokeswoman, said a damage estimate has not yet been calculated. She said the damage was on the second floor and into the basement, below the fan areas.

The broken pipe was discovered at 7:08 p.m., although it's not clear who discovered it.

The water pipe broke on the second floor of the east concourse, causing significant water damage to the carpet on the plaza level and multiple ceiling tiles, reports said. Water also filled the elevator shaft, causing significant electrical damage, reports said.

No information was available this morning on how much water was discharged when the pipe broke.

No other details were immediately available today.

My family was coming out of Crisler Arena after the big 87-71 Win over Bryant University, as I walk into the concourse, outside the glass doors, I can see the Strobes flashing and The alarms were sounding in one of the towers, I thought someone had pulled it, didn't even suspect a water pipe bursting.

a structure that newly remodeled shouldn't have a pipe failure unless something wasn't properly winterized or heated in my opinion. Are we the people of the State of Michigan who collectively own the Athletic Department self insured for this sort of thing or do we purchase insurance from the private sector?

Raises the big question, though: Why is there water even running at that stadium when it is in "off-season"? They are just begging for a problem like this. In Minnesota, their stadium was shut, before the Vikings played there last week.
