Washtenaw Community College to hire new vice president of administration and finance

By Kellie Woodhouse

Washtenaw Community College is looking for a new vice president of administration and finance.

WCC's former finance chief Steven Hardy resigned on Nov. 19.

He had worked at WCC since 2001, when he was hired as the school's financial controller. In 2008, Hardy was promoted to vice president.

Hardy, of Ann Arbor, earned $135,000. He left the college to "to pursue other opportunities," said the school's media representative Janet Hawkins. Hardy has an MBA from Eastern Michigan University.

WCC plans to post the position soon. After a regional search, a committee of administrators hopes to fill the vacancy in early 2013.

@KellieWoodhouse: I see a trend where it seems like *every* higher ed story you run, you publish the person's salary as part of the lead. These are stories where budget and salary are not the focus. Can you please explain your rationale? And if it is so important for context, please provide your own salary information.

Salaries are of significant importance in entities that are funded by taxpayer dollars. A crucial chunk of WCC's budget comes from public funds and tuition dollars. Same with U-M and EMU. I don't publish salaries in every story, but I also don't shy away from publishing them where my editors and I think is appropriate either.

Great man, He was an inspiration to all of us in the way he presented himself. An asset to WCC that will surley be missed.

I too have heard some disturbing stories about the loss of Steven at WCC, and don't know what to believe. What I know is that Steven taught evening classes, with no additional pay after a full day of work, so he could better understand the student and faculty environment. I had the pleasure of working with Steven and always found him to be a thoughtful, considerate and honest person; a model of integrity. I wish him well in his career.

Steve only resigned because he was asked to manipulate the accounting books to please the WCC president whom was spending college funds frivolously. He said no and resigned.

Nice try on the spin. Your evidence? Have you reported this?

Do you have evidence to support this claim? If so, have you shared it with the authorities? Such behavior would seem like malfeasance on the part of the WCC president, if true.

Given how ,much of our tax dollars support WCC, I hope this gets investigated.

Hardy resigned suddenly and with no notice nearly three weeks ago. The WCC student newspaper reported it 10 days ago. And the A2 Snooze is just getting around to this story? Gee, ya don't think something might be amiss, do ya? But the Snooze would have to undertake some actual journalistic investigation to answer that question, wouldn't it? And we all know that's too much to ask. The Chronicle or the Observer will have to get to the bottom of this.
