Webster Township voters said yes to tax renewals to fund public safety and land preservation, but rejected a proposal to override the township's millage rollback.
Township officials had emphasized that no new taxes were involved, but voters said no to Proposal E, which would have added 0.381 mills back into the township's general operating funds.
Proposal C, to renew up to 1.9726 mills for police and fire protection, passed by a margin of 1,148 to 550. The owner of a $200,000 house with taxable value of $100,000 will continue to be assessed $197 per year. The township currently contracts for two full-time county sheriff's deputies and gets fire protection through the Dexter Fire Department.
Proposal D, which renews funding for the Purchase of Development Rights program to preserve open land, was approved 1,021 to 671. It will continue the assessment of 0.4931 mills for the program, or $49 for the owner of a $200,000 home.
The proposal to override the millage rollback was defeated 892 to 789.
