Wind energy component production bolsters Ann Arbor's Kaydon Corp. in 2nd quarter

By AnnArbor.com Staff

An Ann Arbor-based designer and manufacturer of products that feed the wind energy market posted $600,000 year-over-year 2nd quarter gains in that segment of its business, according to a report released today.

Kaydon Corp. said its wind energy sales - part of its friction-control segment - grew to $19.8 million in the 2nd quarter.

However, the designer-manufacturer of products for both alternative energy and defense posted a $41.6 million drop in revenue in the quarter and an $11 million drop in net income for the quarter.

The global financial crisis had an impact on the results, according to the statement from James O’Leary, chairman and chief executive officer.

According to the release, sales to all major markets, except wind energy, in the first half of 2009 were below the comparable periods of the prior year.

Also affecting earnings in the wind sector are national policy on renewable energy, O'Leary said in the statement.

"While long term policy discussions and legislative proposals centering on reducing carbon emissions and promoting growth in renewable energy alternatives remain positive for the long term, the absence of a well-defined renewable electricity standard on a national basis and ongoing customer issues associated with their accessing the financing markets have impacted both current orders and shipments," he wrote.

"The lack of visibility and readily accessible financing has resulted in customers continuing to defer receipt of shipments and to refrain from placing new orders until conditions improve."
