Winter storm watch: Up to 6 inches of snow predicted in Ann Arbor

By Cindy Heflin

This could be the real deal. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for Thursday evening through Friday morning, warning that the Ann Arbor area could get 6 inches of snow or more.

Motorists merge from M-14 onto Interstate 94 during a burst of snow Tuesday morning. More difficult driving conditions could be in store Thursday.

After what's so-far been a mostly mild winter, this storm could bring the most significant snowfall of the season. The storm is expected to begin with a mixture of rain and snow Thursday evening before the precipitation turns to all snow.

The weather service warned motorists to expect snow-covered and slippery roads Thursday night and Friday.

The weather service now says 3 to 5 inches of snow could fall Thursday night, followed by another 1 to 2 inches on Friday. The chance of precipitation Thursday night is 100 percent, forecasters said.

An earlier forecast had predicted a slightly smaller snowfall.

A winter storm watch means there is a potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulation that may affect travel.

A Winter Storm Warning has now been issued. They are saying 4-5 inches for ann arbor area (along I-94), up to 8 inches further north. Enough to be annoying, that's for sure.

I highly doubt the accumulation will be more than an inch

Well, OK, it may snow after all.

Thu, Feb 23, 2012 : 5:47 p.m.

Yeah, and when the snow happens, all the doubters will then be complaining about the snow on the roads and the road commission not being prepared to remove it promptly enough, right? And those that are in accidents or run late for work or are upset for their inconvenience, due to their lack of planning due to the storm will also be complaining, right? Always the complainers. ROFL.

Here's a formula I heard that seems to hold true almost every time: Take the minimum of what is predicted and cut it in half. That is how much snow will fall in Ann Arbor.

Thu, Feb 23, 2012 : 2:56 p.m.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'll believe it when I see it.

Thu, Feb 23, 2012 : 2:44 p.m.

Wait, wasn't that supposed to be happening NOW? I wanted to wake up to five inches of snow! Now tomorrow I have to deal with it! I really don't want to get stuck in it going to work.

Thu, Feb 23, 2012 : 1:23 p.m.

We went through this yesterday when the original article had the exact forecast of the NWS. Just like it does today.

Well, there goes my list of things to do tomorrow. I really wanted to be all productive on my day off. Guess I'll just have to sit in front of the fire place with my cups of tea and watch tv. Horrible.

Where is Global Warming when we need it! Please leave you cars Idle tonight and tomorrow so we can create enough "Green House Gas " to melt the snow before it arrives! Also, leave your lights on!

Where? How about November, December, January and February to name some recent examples.

AAAAAAAAiiiiieeeeeeee! Snowmageddon! Thundersnow! Quick go out and buy plastic sheeting and duct tape for the safe room, stock up on food and water, load the guns.

Wed, Feb 22, 2012 : 11:58 p.m.

Uhhhmmmmm..... don't you already DO that, Jim? I know you got the loaded guns and the 'safe' room!

Wed, Feb 22, 2012 : 11:09 p.m.

Every one should go get studs and chains because the Washtenaw County Road Commission is gonna be at the coffee shops wasting the tax payers money. Just saying...

Prediction: No more than 1 inch will fall.

Thu, Feb 23, 2012 : 5:22 a.m.

My prediction: It will be revealed that is in cahoots with Wonder Bread. Every time there is a chance of decent accumulation the shelves are bare.

Wed, Feb 22, 2012 : 11:09 p.m.

Prediction: I never see you or your dog again. Oh, wait, that's from a Seinfeld episode. Never mind.

Wed, Feb 22, 2012 : 10:22 p.m.

Oh great, schools on winter break so no snow day!!

Wed, Feb 22, 2012 : 10:21 p.m.

Why is it that the only two times it's really snowed this year have come on nights when I have to drive somewhere after work?

Wed, Feb 22, 2012 : 10:12 p.m.

I don't long as its gets really warm over the weekend to help melt it.

Wed, Feb 22, 2012 : 9:42 p.m.

Got my fingers crossed, that would be sweet! If we get it, Snyder should declare a State Holiday in honor of our one day of winter.
