Man killed in one-car rollover crash in Augusta Township

By Julie Baker

Editor's note: This story has been updated to correct the sex of the crash victim. The sheriff's office noted the corrected information in a media summary Monday.

A 31-year-old man was killed early Saturday in Augusta Township when his car struck a culvert, became airborne and struck several trees before coming to rest on its top, according to a media summary from the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's deputies received a call for the one-vehicle crash about 2:57 a.m. Saturday on Whitaker Road, south of Judd. Deputies, the Augusta Township Fire Department and Huron Valley Ambulance responded to the scene, the release said.

The 31-year-old driver, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators have determined that the man was northbound on Whitaker Road. He was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, the release said.

It is unknown if speed or alcohol were factors. The incident remains under investigation.

I would guess he was going at least 40 mph, since he went airborne.

"She was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash" This story is very sad...I wish more people wore seatbelts. In our car everybody wears seatbelts, even in the back, regardless of age.

This is very tragic. Just wondering, is there really an Augusta Township Police Department? I was under the impression that Augusta Township was served by the Washtenaw Sheriff Department.

The story should say the fire department responded. Thanks for the catch.
