Couple files false report about carjacking, Ypsilanti police say

By Lee Higgins

Ypsilanti police are seeking charges against a couple who falsely reported a carjacking in the 700 block of Green Road Sunday afternoon, police said.

A woman claimed a man pulled her out of the passenger side of a Ford Expedition, got into the driver's side and left the area, a police incident log said.

Officers say they interviewed the woman and her boyfriend, who owns the vehicle, and determined it was a false report. Police say her boyfriend loaned the vehicle to someone, and reporting a carjacking was his way of seeking police assistance to get it back.

The woman provided police with a description of the carjacker, who she claimed rode up on a bicycle, according to the log.

Filing a false police report of a felony crime is a felony punishable by up to four years in prison.

@loudgazelle, if you re-read the article it will say that this was a false report, there was NO carjacking...there was NO guy on a bicycle. But I am alarmed at frequency of false reports being made. Such a waste of manpower that could actually be out there helping those that really need police assistance.

I wonder if the guy on the bike was the same dude who stole the cars over in the 8600 block of Spinnaker Way: http://www.annarbor.com/news/vehicles-stolen-from-ypsilanti-township-home-as-owner-was-warming-them-up/ You never know- as my buddy Luke says, "once a criminal, always a criminal"- he would know, he's seen every episode of Matlock at least 2 times.

Sigh...there has been such large string of false reports in the area lately! I wish people would realize that the police/EMTs are already stretched thin, and when they waste time with their shenanigans, they're taking them away from someone who actually needs help. Lame.

Why didn't he report the vehicle stolen after the "someone" he loaned it to failed to return it, wouldn't that have solved his problem? The police would then have had to be on the lookout, and the "borrower" would be the one in trouble. Oh wait, that's right...ask Forest's Momma.

Don't know what to say other than....are you friggin serious? Why would anyone commit a crime because they have a deadbeat friend? To quote Forest Gump's Momma...."stupid is as stupid does".
