Woman robbed near Eastern Michigan University parking structure

By Lee Higgins

A 20-year-old woman was robbed Tuesday night near an Eastern Michigan University parking structure, an Ypsilanti police incident log said.

She was walking near the intersection of North Adams and Pearl streets at about 8:35 p.m. when a man walked up behind her and demanded her belongings, the log said.

He told her not to turn around. The victim handed over a cell phone, wallet and other items, according to the log. A detailed description of the man was not available.

Police continue to investigate the incident.

There is a parking structure on Pearl Street at North Adams, a block from the bus station.

North Adams and Pearl Street near EMU parking structure? Which structure is that? The only EMU parking structure I'm aware of is on the campus and it is no where near North Adams and Pearl Street. Is the reported location correct?

There are too many crackheads around the bus stop. Why don't the police have officers on foot? I have been asked a few times for "some work" by random strangers while walking in the area. A few undercover officers would definitely make a difference in the area.

EMU's new police Chief Greg O'Dell has done a marvelous job of getting officers out and around campus. As a student I often see them both in cars and walking the buildings. Things are much safer than they were a few years ago before he started. Not only do we students get notified of crimes on campus via text message but also crimes NEAR campus including descriptions and suggestions for being safe. I have never felt unsafe on Campus. Unfortunatly, I have felt unsafe just a few blocks from campus. know Ypsi has it's problems with money and police like many cities these days but EMU Police are great.

These are the last ten headlines in the Crime Sectio of AnnArbor.com for the last three days. I have no problem with them reporting any of these crimes, I do take issue with the lack of any Ann Arbor crime reporting for the last three days. I guess there has been no crime. There were 5 larcenies (thefts) on the U of M campus today. On Tuesday someone threw a brick through one of the Michigan Union windows. If the truth be known, all those out of state students might not want to come to tree city.

Eastern has a SEEUS program. If you need a ride or an escort, all you have to do is call! SW40 I agree with you. Something is wrong with A2.com's reporting. In addition, it's my opinion that the UofM police list robberies as larcenies. There is a fine line between the two.

SW40 - I don't know what areas you consider campus I guess, but robberies have been occuring around campus (one was a sorority house) pretty frequently lately. Maybe you feel the need to take an issue with annarbor.com posting this article, but I appreciate it very much since I consider this a warning to myself to be extra alert on my walk home since I live on North Adams by Pearl Street.

Dr I have you beeen on EMU's Campus lately, you can't turn around without seeing a police officer. By the way there hasn't been a robbery on campus this year. AnnArbor.com chooses to post headlines like Women robbed near Eastern Michigan University parking structure rather than Women robbed near downtown Ypsilanti because its more eye catching. I have lived and worked in the Ypsilanti Ann Arbor area for years and the bias is amazing from the Ann Arbor based newspapers. Check the crime stats for EMU Vs UofM and Ypsi versus Ann Arbor, Yes Ann Arbor and UofM are larger but they also have more crime. So why is it everytime I turn around there is another story about EMU or Ypsi. The funny thing is the authors will continue to do it because they think is journalism. Why don't you cover some of the dope dealers and gun runners living Scio Farms.

Dr. I - they have it, plenty of it - I've seen it consistently for the past 15 weeks. I also had class last night, and there are pairs of students that walk people to their cars, and I've seen uniformed security every week. The COB is in a very "interesting" part of Mich Ave - I think this was a very unfortunate incident - but EMU has made a concerted and visible effort to increase the safety of COB students. I feel safe attending this school - but "eyes and ears" should always be alert. It's not mentioned in the article, but the first thing stolen was a cell phone. I've read many of these types of muggings where the person was literally on the phone when they were approached. Safety first, call later.

As an Alum of EMU.. I believe that the EMU police department is visible around campus. They can't be everywhere all the time... Around the C.O.B. parking structure falls both on the city and the university. This in general is not a great part of town, people need to take this into consideration and not walk alone. Don't walk alone! At least no one was hurt during this altercation!

EMU needs to have a stronger police presence on campus and maybe more security people who will make it less of a place where robbers want to do their work. Even red beret type students patrolling could cut down on crime, and security cameras all over campus would also help. If EMU wants to attract students, they need to offer safety.

While in general I concur, I feel I must point out for those less informed that the equipment in your hands can only help if the equipment between your ears stand ready to use it. Situational awareness to avoid or prepare to address comes before having the firearm to defuse the situation. Cheers and be safe.

I'd suggest asking your two friends, Mr. Smith and Mr. Wesson, to help you hand over your "belongings"...
