Woman threatened during ATM robbery at 1 a.m. Tuesday

By Paula Gardner

A man wearing a hoodie and black Converse "Chuck Taylors" robbed a woman at an Ann Arbor ATM early Tuesday, according to the University of Michigan.

U-M issued a crime alert to the campus following the incident, which took place at the corner of South University and South Forest near campus.

According to the report, the victim was at the ATM when the man approached her and held an object to her neck as he demanded cash. The item possibly was a knife, according to the alert.

The man ran away after the robbery, heading toward campus and possibly the Diag, the alert said. He took both money and the victim's ATM card.

He was described as white but of an undetermined age. He's 5'6"-6'2" with short dark hair, and was wearing a dark hoodie that zipped, blue jeans and black Converse.

Anyone with information should contact U-M's Department of Public Safety at (734)763-1131 or the Ann Arbor Police Department Tip Line at (734)794-6939 or online.

Lol, love reading stuff like this in retrospect. It was a false report.

Yeah, I live in Ypsi TWP, and never once had I a problem a an ATM. Maybe it would help going threw a DRIVE THREW ATM the is usually one at every bank. There is a button where you can end transaction anytime. Let the machine eat the card, it's not worth your life.

Again I ask, why does the article direct people to call university police for a city police case. You do know they are two separate departments right? Just because the university sends out the alert doesn't mean people should contact them over a case they are not handling.

This is why more people need to be armed. By not carrying anything (gun or any sort of protection), you are also causing more damage to the people around you because the criminals will be more likely to try things like this. If someone tries to rob me like this, they won't be walking away. I take things like this very seriously.

At 1am in morning I doubt the street was "crowded". And if the suspect was close enough to physically press something against the woman's neck she would not be shooting "towards" the robber. At that range she would be shooting into him. A victim being disarmed and the weapon used against them doesn't happen "more often". It happens very rarely. Do a little research and don't make up statistics.

Yeah right...so she pulls a gun and shoos toward the robber on a crowded city street...come on. Or what happens more often, she is disarmed and the criminal shots her at the worst or now has a gun to commit an armed robbery. Better to lose some cash than a life.

I avoid using ATM's in the City of Ann Arbor, just too much risk with all of the recent crime.

I think the bank is at fault here for putting the ATM in such a crime ridden area.

Going alone, on foot, to an ATM in the middle of the night: most people avoid this particular course of action. Shame on the human predators who commit such crimes. I'm glad this victim was not also injured.

I never go to a ATM after dark. During the day, I do not go alone. I drive but my spouse has a permit to carry a weapon. My bank is kind of out in the country. Better safe than sorry. I'm so glad the woman wasn't injured. (and hope the suspect is caught soon).

Using a walk up ATM alone at night is a very bad idea!

I was once approached at that same ATM by a drug dealer asking if I wanted any shrooms. He didn't rob me though.

Opportunity blown. You should've bought some.

I have always been hesitant to use a walk-up ATM, no matter the time of day. I try to keep a mental map of drive-up ATMs. That way, if anybody tries a robbery, at least I can gun it and have a chance to escape.
